David Mitchell plays the titular John "Ludwig" Taylor, a deeply introverted puzzle creator and writer of puzzle books who investigates the sudden disappearance of his identical twin brother, DCI James Taylor, also played by Mitchell. John takes on the guise of his brother as part of the police force in order to solve what happened to James, all while having to work additional cases. Season 2 has finished airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. According to Barb data from overnights.tv (via Deadline), Ludwig had the UK's most-watched launch of a scripted show so far this year across all broadcasters and streaming services. Ludwig season 2, episode 1 had an audience of 9.1 million, outperforming The Night Manager season 2's 8.7 million and Small Prophets' 7.6 million. However, the BBC's unscripted reality series The Traitors still has the most dominant premiere of 2026 with an audience of 13.3 million. The Ludwig season 2 finale received 1.6 million viewers overnight, although catch-up viewership on BBC iPlayer in the days after each episode's debut is where the series has proven to perform particularly well. Season 1 was the top-rated scripted series launch of 2024, successfully satiating the appetite for a cozy mystery, and it has continued to deliver on this with record-breaking numbers in season 2. Mark Brotherhood is the creator, showrunner, and writer of Ludwig. His other credits include the UK's Shameless, Death in Paradise, and Father Brown. The series is produced by Big Talk, whose CEO, Kenton Allen, released a statement praising the show and Brotherhood's creative vision. Check out Allen's statement below: Ludwig is a gloriously eccentric detective at the heart of a show that has never played by the usual rules, so to see more than nine million people embrace him is genuinely thrilling. Mark Brotherhood has created that rare thing: a clever, funny, warm-hearted show that audiences seem to have made part of their lives.” Along with the massive viewership, both seasons of Ludwig have been very well-received. The show holds an overall 93% critics' score and 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 1 has a near-perfect Tomatometer of 97% and a Popcornmeter of 87%. Season 2 is lower, with the Tomatometer at 89% and the Popcornmeter at 71%, although season 1's critics' score is "Certified Fresh" based on 33 reviews, while season 2 only has nine reviews so far. The detective series has already been renewed for season 3 and a Christmas special featuring Mitchell, Anna Maxwell Martin, Dylan Hughes, and Dipo Ola. Martin plays John's sister-in-law, Lucy Betts-Taylor, Hughes plays Lucy and James' son, Henry Betts-Taylor, and Ola plays DCI Russell Carter. The special episode will see John, Lucy, and Henry going to a Christmas-themed hotel in Yorkshire, only for a blackout to turn the holiday into a murder mystery. The special episode's other guest stars are Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Rebekah Staton, Claire Price, Ariella Glaser, and George Rainsford. American audiences may recognize Mitchell's voice from episodes of Doctor Who, Rick and Morty, Phineas and Ferb, Peppa Pig, and Illumination's 2023 film Migration, all of which were released prior to Ludwig seasons 1 and 2.
