BBC star Bob Harris shares cancer update after getting ‘a little bit worried’

The 80-year-old radio presenter, who stepped away from his BBC Radio 2 shows earlier this year to focus on his health, shared the encouraging news after speaking to his oncologist. Bob has been living with prostate cancer since first being diagnosed in 2007, but revealed earlier this year that the disease had spread to his spine. More recently, he told fans his cancer had begun ‘getting more of a hold,’ prompting him to undergo an intensive new course of treatment. However, in a video shared on Instagram, the veteran broadcaster was delighted to reveal things were now looking more hopeful. ‘Hey folks, it’s Bob here and you know I said I’ve got some news,’ he began. ‘I’m so thrilled to be able to bring you this news. I was a little bit worried a short time ago, but everything is getting back under control now.’ Bob then reflected on what the update meant for his future, adding: ‘I can see the pathway of my life ahead of me opening up again.’ And there could be even more news on the horizon, as the former Old Grey Whistle Test presenter teased that he had another announcement coming at 10am on Tuesday. The positive update comes after Bob spoke candidly last month about a change in his condition. Sharing photographs from his hospital bed, he explained that while he continued to feel well, his cancer had been progressing during a summer spent with his loved ones. He said stepping away from broadcasting had allowed him to enjoy a ‘most precious commodity… TIME’, including treasured moments with friends and family. His latest update now suggests that treatment is having the desired effect. It has been a difficult year for the much-loved presenter, who announced in June that health problems had forced him to bring his decades-long BBC Radio 2 career to an end. Bob stepped down from both The Country Show and Sounds of the 70s, explaining at the time that he needed to concentrate on ‘getting well again’. Calling it ‘one of the hardest decisions’ of his life, he said he did not want to remain behind the microphone if he could no longer give his listeners ‘100%’. ‘I am going to miss you, and I love you very much. Thank you for listening,’ he told fans. Bob’s broadcasting career has stretched across more than five decades. After helping to establish Time Out magazine in the late 1960s, he became synonymous with BBC music programming through The Old Grey Whistle Test, which he presented from 1972 to 1979. He later became one of Radio 2’s best-known voices and hosted The Country Show from 1999, as well as programmes across BBC Radio 6 Music and other stations. His recent cancer treatment is not the first major health battle to interrupt his broadcasting career. In 2019, Bob suffered an aortic dissection – a tear in the body’s main artery – which forced him to temporarily step away from his radio work. When his retirement was announced earlier this year, Radio 2 boss Helen Thomas described him as a ‘true radio legend’ and said he was ‘adored’ by colleagues and listeners.
