THE BBC have quietly axed the Women’s Football Show ahead of the new season. But they are actually scaling UP their coverage of women’s football ahead of next year’s World Cup in Brazil. The Women’s Football Show provided WSL highlights on BBC One. It aired at 11.30pm on Sundays after Match of the Day with a presenter and pundits in the studio. However, it was put up on iPlayer at 9pm. Now, though, the Beeb have launched a dedicated women’s football YouTube channel as they put greater emphasis on digital channels rather than declining terrestrial TV. Highlights will also be available on other platforms and iPlayer. A BBC Spokesperson said: “BBC Sport remains fully committed to women’s football and the WSL. “As we build towards the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup, audiences will be able to watch highlights from every WSL match across BBC platforms, including iPlayer, YouTube and the BBC Sport website and app. “In addition, BBC Sport will broadcast 25 live WSL matches, alongside live Uefa Women’s Champions League coverage, ensuring fans can follow the biggest stories and moments from the women’s game on free-to-air platforms.” The Guardian also report the BBC are plotting a new YouTube chat show focusing on the WSL and women’s football. It would be fronted by Alex Scott and is said to be inspired by The Overlap with England internationals past and present set to be part of the panel. The Women’s FA Cup moved from the Beeb to Channel 4 and TNT Sports. Earlier this year, Football Focus – presented by Scott – was terminated amid falling viewership numbers. Elsewhere on Tuesday, the BBC announced the end of Ski Sunday after nearly 50 years. The programme was a staple for Sunday afternoons showcasing the best of winter sports but was dropped as part of the latest changes moving away from traditional TV towards online content. Comment now
