BBC comedy legend looks unrecognisable with grey hair and specs 27 years after playing iconic character

A SCOTTISH comedy icon looks completely different after first rising to fame on the BBC. The 72-year-old who has his own show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year recently told how the Beeb told him one of his most popular series was not going to be renewed just before hitting the stage. He played the character for 24 years who became known as the alcoholic, deadbeat who wore shabby clothes. Sign up for the TV newsletter Thank you! Gregor has recently been on a promotional tour for his new Fringe show and is unrecognisable nearly 40 years after first fighting fame. The actor told in a recent interview with BBC Radio Scotland how early in his was career he was reluctant to take on the Rab C Nesbitt role because he did not want to be known as a one trick pony. I wanted to have more of a breadth to my career.” It was this interview with BBC Radio Scotland that Gregor joked may have led to his most recent series, Only Child getting axed after first debuting in 2024. “I went to do my [Edinburgh Fringe] show and I was just about to go on the stage when my phone went,” he revealed on Instagram. Most read in TV “It was somebody from the BBC to tell me that Greg McHugh and I’s show Only Child, which I really enjoyed doing, had been cancelled. Fisher said he received the call about the cancellation the same day he swore live on air during an appearance on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoons show. He said: “I inadvertently said a bad word, it might have been b*****d. It just slipped out. “Do you think the two are connected? The fact I swore on the BBC and I have been sacked. “I have still got my show at the Edinburgh Festival so come along because you might never see me again. “I will probably never be on the television again because I said ‘b*****d on Radio Scotland.” Gregor is currently starring in his one-man Fringe show, An (Early) Evening With Gregor Fisher, where he recalls anecdotes from his life and career.
