Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Battlestar Galactica has introduced some of science fiction's most iconic crews over the years, dating back to the original 1978 series starring Lorne Greene as Commander Adama. Alongside legendary characters like Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, and Colonel Tigh, Adama led the surviving remnants of humanity on a perilous journey through space and kicked off what would become a cult-favorite franchise. The acclaimed 2004 reboot gave us a fresh set of faces for a new generation of fans, with the legendary Edward James Olmos taking command of the Galactica alongside a crew that included Kara Thrace, Lee Adama, and Sharon Valerii, among others. While both iterations featured their own unforgettable characters, the franchise has largely revolved around the same core members and their struggle for survival against the Cylons. However, Scattered Hopes is a brand-new Battlestar Galactica project that introduces an entirely new crew of Colonial survivors, and it's one that offers a fresh perspective on one of the most devastating events in the franchise's history. Battlestar Galactica Gives Fans A New Crew In Scattered Hopes Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes takes the franchise in an exciting new direction by introducing an entirely different crew of survivors, leaving Commander Adama and the Galactica's familiar faces behind for an original adventure. That said, the game is still firmly rooted in the established timeline of the 2004 reboot, taking place during the most catastrophic event in the franchise's history. Specifically, Scattered Hopes takes place in the immediate aftermath of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, when the Cylons launch their surprise attack against humanity. These events were originally depicted in the 2003 miniseries that set up the reboot, making the game something of a companion story to the television series. While Commander William Adama, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, Lee "Apollo" Adama, and the rest of the familiar crew are aboard the Galactica, attempting to protect the surviving remnants of humanity, Scattered Hopes follows another fleet's attempt to find them. Players take command of this new group of survivors, making decisions about personnel, resources, and the fleet's survival while avoiding waves of Cylon attacks in a roguelite-style gameplay loop. The game also features procedurally generated narrative events, meaning each run offers up its own unique details. It's an intriguing premise that allows players to experience the Cylon invasion from an entirely different perspective, exploring what happened to some of the countless survivors who weren't fortunate enough to find themselves under Adama's protection. The ultimate goal of the game is to reunite with the Galactica, bringing the story full circle and connecting with the 2004 show directly. While it launched to somewhat mixed reviews and still has a 7/10 on Steam overall, Scattered Hopes is a really great homage to the franchise and will be a must-play for Battlestar fans in general, especially fans of the 2004 reboot series. Developed by Alt Shift and published by Dotemu, Scattered Hopes launched on May 11, 2026, exclusively for PC via Steam. The game takes a considerably different approach from traditional sci-fi action titles, with a unique combo of survival-strategy, fleet management, and roguelite mechanics, and it arguably does a great job at capturing what's at stake in the ongoing struggle against the Cylons. Players must manage an entire fleet of survivors, making difficult decisions about limited supplies, ship upgrades, crew training, and even potential threats from within. It goes beyond simple resource management, with everything from medical emergencies and political disagreements to suspected Cylon infiltrators within the crew. Combat is based on real-time tactical encounters with the Cylons, although players can pause the action to issue commands and coordinate attacks. Given the overwhelming strength of the enemy, survival might mean holding out long enough to make an FTL jump instead of trying to destroy every opposing ship. The roguelite structure also makes it highly replayable, with different starting fleets, unlockable upgrades, and procedurally generated events keeping things fresh each run. For longtime Battlestar Galactica fans, it's a worthwhile chance to revisit the beloved universe from an entirely new perspective and gives players a truly original take on the cult-favorite sci-fi universe.
