Battlestar Galactica Is Officially Getting A New Release Next Week

In 2003, the acclaimed reimagining of the original Battlestar Galactica premiered as a miniseries on the then-Sci-Fi Network. This served as a springboard for the main TV series that ran for four seasons from 2004 to 2009, and also included two tie-in movies. Now, Battlestar Galactica fans can look forward to being able to watch the show in a new format soon. As listed by blu-ray.com, the complete Battlestar Galactica series will be available to buy as a Blu-ray collection starting on Tuesday, August 11. This collection also includes the aforementioned tie-in movies, Razor and The Plan, as well as the prequel film Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Additionally, there will be numerous special features, including commentary tracks and deleted scenes. Blood & Chrome’s inclusion in the Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series set is curious considering that, unlike Razor and The Plan, it wasn’t originally directly associated with the main TV show. Originally released as a web series, Blood & Chrome was intended to function as a pilot for a new TV series following a young William Adama fighting in the First Cylon War. However, it was ultimately not picked up, leaving it as a standalone project. Luke Pasqualino starred as Adama in Blood & Chrome, inheriting the role from Edward James Olmos. This corner of continuity in the Battlestar Galactica franchise also includes Caprica, the prequel series that takes place 58 years before the Battlestar Galactica reimagining and explores how the Twelve Colonies of Kobol created its Cylons. Featuring an ensemble that includes Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson, and Alessandra Torresani, the underseen Caprica only ran for one season on Syfy. The complete series can still be purchased separately digitally and as a DVD collection, as well as be streamed on both Paramount+ and Peacock. Created by Ronald D. Moore, the modern Battlestar Galactica follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by depicting the remnants of humanity banding together after the Twelve Colonies by the Cylons and embarking on a mission to find Earth, the legendary Thirteenth Colony. Along with its darker and more mature tone, Moore’s take on Battlestar Galactica distinguishes itself by featuring human-looking Cylon models that command the robotic underlings. Olmos is joined in Battlestar Galactica by Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Allis, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park, among many others. Nearly 20 years after its conclusion, it still ranks as one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time, with its accolades including winning a Peabody Award and several Emmys, and the Television Critics Association's Program of the Year Award. Along with its forthcoming Blu-ray release, Battlestar Galactica can also currently be streamed on Paramount+, though Razor and The Plan cannot be accessed on the platform. Though Peacock was developing a new Battlestar Galactica series that would have been set in the same continuity as the 2004 show, the streamer scrapped the project in 2024.
