THIS weekend will see an epic celebration take place for the 90th anniversary of the first ever Spitfire taking to the skies. To mark the occasion, iconic wartime aircraft will be joined by the Red Arrows to turn back the clock to the summer of 1940 at this year’s Battle of Britain Duxford Show. The event is set to bring together the largest gathering of Spitfires in the UK this year as it takes its audience on a journey 86 years into the past. Showing off the famous Duxford Big Wing formation in all its glory, it will take place at the historic Cambridgeshire grounds and airfield of IWM Duxford, where the Spitfire first flew. Among the historic fighter planes present at the anniversary are of course Spitfires and Hurricanes, as well as rare aircraft like the B-17 along with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There’s also the chance to explore museum exhibitions and hangars, which are packed with incredible aircraft from the Second World War through to today. That’s all included in a standard ticket, which is £49.50 for an adult over the age of 16, with any younger person getting in for free if accompanied by an adult. They are set to fly into Duxford at 1.30pm, with the spectacle set to last for around 15-20 minutes. After that, the team will head back and return at RAF Waddington by 2.11pm.
