One of the greatest fighters in DC history, Bruce Wayne has had some amazing fight scenes, from methodically destroying the Mutant Leader in The Dark Knight Returns to his iconic loss against the spine-snapping Bane. Now, DC has surpassed his previous clashes, with a fight scene that isn't just heavy on the action but peppered with hardcore quotes and diving deep into the dichotomy of Batman as a mere mortal who is capable of superhuman feats. Batman: Bad Seeds Unleashes Epic Fight DC's recent Batman #13 - from Matt Fraction, Matteo Scalera, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles - is basically one long, epic fight scene as Batman battles his way up the GCPD building to confront Gotham's villainous police commissioner Vandal Savage. To get there, he has to take on a small army of Savage's Tactical Urban Combat Officers. "You want to fight ME in the DARK? Fine." - Batman The fight is an epic ballet of violence, as Batman uses his grapple hook, flash grenades and fists to plow through Savage's corrupt officers. However, the scene takes on GOAT status when Bruce is confronted by a hulking officer nicknamed 'Big Boy,' tackling him down into the shadowy depths of the station's stairwell. Bruce starts off the fight with the savage quote: "You want to fight ME in the DARK? Fine." Bruce destroys his opponent, bellowing up a stairwell full of troops, "WHO'S NEXT?!" in art from Scalera and Morey that is likely to go down in Batman history. However, this is where the fight goes from a great action scene to a truly fantastic Batman moment. The Best Ending to a Batman Fight Ever Intimidated by Batman's victory and shamed by his desperate desire to save Gotham from a spreading plant apocalypse brought about by Poison Ivy and Savage, the assembled TUCO officers stand down, allowing Batman to pass with their heads hung low. The issue ends with Batman yelling for "SAVAGE!", confronting the immortal villain on the rooftop of GCPD headquarters, with Ivy's vines closing in. This moment perfectly encapsulates Batman's defining feature as both hyper-capable hero and limited mortal. The art emphasizes that he's battered and bruised from the fight and couldn't actually personally defeat the army staring down at him, but his righteousness and reputation manage to intimidate them into doing the right thing. All that, and he finds time to shelter innocents from gunfire and share a moment of camaraderie with (the former) Commissioner Gordon. Batman #13 Understands What Makes the Dark Knight Great The idea that Batman is written to 'do anything and beat anyone' is often bandied around by fans, but it's a concept that the comics have been engaging with for decades, and stories like this issue's prolonged fight scene explore the most interesting version of this perspective. Batman is a human in a world of superhumans and demigods, and he's bound by physical limitations that other heroes aren't. However, specifically because he manages to stand alongside them, he possesses a reputation for doing the impossible. That reputation is his ultimate weapon, with Bruce Wayne using the myth of 'Batman' to actually accomplish the impossible. Batman #13's fight scene is exactly that - Batman inhabiting his own legend to win the fight he can and avoid the fight he can't. But at the same time as punching his way to victory and intimidating the evil around him, Batman also holds onto his humanity and a seemingly contradictory ability to inspire - he doesn't just intimidate the TUCO agents, he shows them that they're wrong and sends them out into Gotham to be better. It's rare that event stories lead to truly fantastic moments, but 'Bad Seeds' has bucked the trend, with Batman #13 delivering a Dark Knight fight scene for the ages.
