Backrooms: Impending Doom will release in January, following a failed research expedition team after all but one of its members goes missing. Promising psychological horror and a first-person perspective, this return to the Backrooms looks pretty enticing so far. Developed and published by FD Team, Backrooms: Impending Doom is set to release on January 20, 2027. Right now, you can experience the Prologue for free on Steam. "Level 0 is where the trail begins. The expedition went further. So will you," teases the official description. A trailer and screenshots can also be found on its official Steam page. Of course, this isn't the only Backrooms-themed video game releasing next year. Shadow of the Backrooms has a 2027 window, with no specific release date given yet. Another game, The Edge of the Backrooms, is also set to launch sometime in 2027. All three games are from different studios, but each explores concepts and locations introduced in Kane Parsons' cerebral Backrooms series. Of these three games, only Backrooms: Impending Doom has a specific release date, offering fans something more concrete to wait for. This is a single-player, first-person adventure. The official description reads: What was meant to be a routine expedition ends in disappearance inside Level 0. The team is gone. Landmarks lose their meaning. Space stops obeying logic, and every new zone tightens its grip on your perception, memory, and sense of direction. You'll need to follow the traces of the expedition in order to discover what really happened. Along the way, expect your stamina to deplete, offering more urgency. Your Synchronization, which connects you to reality, will weaken with every minute spent inside the Backrooms. The game promises not to rely on jump scares but rather the oppressiveness of being lost in endless corridors and discovering a distorted reality. The Backrooms movie received positive reviews and was also commercially successful, so it makes sense that longtime fans (as well as new ones) will want to experience that kind of liminal horror through video games. While Backrooms: Impending Doom isn't officially connected to the film, it should have plenty of content that fans of the movie will find familiar — and terrifying. Backrooms: Impending Doom will release in about 3 months from now, but be sure to check out the demo on Steam now. It should give you an idea of what to expect when the game fully launched next year. In the meantime, if you missed seeing it in theaters, the Backrooms movie is now streaming on HBO Max. Brand Valve Original Release Date September 12, 2003
