Ayaneo shrank the Game Boy to $89, and it undercuts every handheld we've recommended this year

Handheld gaming hasn't been the cheapest hobby recently. The Steam Deck's cheaper LCD model went out of production, and the OLED versions got a nasty price hike, which reportedly wiped out 82% of its sales. However, Ayaneo doesn't seem to have gotten that memo, as it's shipping a miniaturised version of an already-small handheld console for a cool $89. It clocks in with a 3.3-inch LCD screen, 960x720 resolution, and a 4:3 ratio, which is perfect for rendering older titles. Each model comes with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, but you can grab a variant of the gray model with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage if you want to keep things lean. Despite its looks, you shouldn't assume this device is fated to run Game Boy games and nothing else. It packs an MTK Helio G85 chip, which should comfortably handle games around the PS1/N64 era, but it may struggle with anything of a later gen. Still, that's very impressive for the price point. Speaking of which, the 2GB variant will cost $89 at retail, and $109 for the 3GB variant. The former is cheaper than the Konkr Pocket Advance by a cool $20, which we dedicated a wholehearted recommendation to. It also bucks the trend of settling for second-hand or past-gen handhelds over new ones, as you'll have better luck grabbing the Konkr Pocket Block than you would scoring a Steam Deck or Switch 2 for under $100.
