Avengers Endgame: Encore's New Footage & How It Sets Up Doomsday

When the Phase 3 culminating event film originally came out in 2019, there was no thought of what it would mean or how it would connect to the Avengers' next big-screen adventure. But with the Russos back to direct the fifth Avengers and bringing Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth back, connections were, as Thanos would say, inevitable. Anthony and Joe Russo have talked up Endgame as "required" viewing before the December 18 blockbuster. To emphasize this point, Marvel Studios has re-released Endgame in theaters with new footage connecting to Doomsday. Rather than recutting the 3-hour movie to make major changes, the directors and Marvel altered how Avengers: Endgame ends and what comes in the credits. The re-release, officially known as Avengers Endgame: Encore, adds several new scenes. This includes an extended final scene and three post-credits scenes, after the original movie had zero. All the additional footage helps set up Avengers: Doomsday​​​​​​'s story and has major implications for what's coming next. Loki Visits Steve Rogers & Peggy Carter In Avengers: Endgame's New Ending Avengers Endgame: Encore ends in the same fashion as the original movie: Steve Rogers (Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) reunited in the past and enjoying a dance. However, the movie no longer cuts to black after they kiss. The happy couple continues dancing until someone starts knocking on the door. Steve immediately hides behind a wall as Peggy goes to open the door. Peggy doesn't recognize their visitor, but it is Loki (Tom Hiddleston). He steps through the front door and tells Peggy, "I believe I can help you. Both of you." That's when Steve comes out from behind the wall and lays eyes on the Avengers' first villain. This Loki is not the trickster god that Steve knows. This is the Loki who used the Tesseract to leave 2012 in Avengers: Endgame, got captured by the Time Variance Authority, worked with the agency to protect the multiverse and stop He Who Remains, and became the God of Stories who watches over all branched realities, as seen in Loki. He is seen wearing his usual TVA suit, making it unclear exactly from what point in Loki's journey he's come to "help" Steve and Peggy. Loki season 2 ended with him at the End of Time keeping the multiverse together, so this visit may have happened before that destiny. Doctor Doom Collects Hulk In Avengers: Endgame Encore's First Credits Scene After the extended ending, Avengers Endgame: Encore's credits are interrupted by its first post-credits scene. The security camera-like video shows a man in a bunker, and it is revealed to be Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). The scene takes place after Spider-Man: Brand New Day's ending, as Bruce mentions he had his first "incident" in over a decade, leading him to contain himself two miles underground in an old military base. Bruce is seen recording a video log about why he is down here, revealing that he's been experimenting with a new gamma suppression serum. But his primary goal for this self-exile from civilization was to make sure the Hulk doesn't get out, and no one else gets in (a result of Jean Grey messing with his mind before). It appears Bruce is safe and alone, until the electricity starts glitching and he is startled by a visitor. With a green glow now in the bunker, Doctor Doom's unmistakable voice is heard as he greets "Mr. Banner." Bruce questions why he is here, prompting Doom to say, "I'm here to collect you." The camera cuts to black as Hulk roars, but the video continues after as the camera falls to the ground and reveals what's left of the spell Doom cast to abduct the green Avenger. The TVA Watches Incursions Destroy The Multiverse In Encore's Second Credits Scene Avengers Endgame: Encore's credits drop more new footage with a second post-credits scene. This time, viewers are taken to the TVA headquarters. Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) welcomes us to the location as Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) reports to work. She introduces the organization for the uninitiated, most notably saying, "There's a whole mess of universes out there. Our job is keeping them tidy and safe. So do us a favor and stay in your universe, so we don't have to hunt you down like a dog." Mobius then finds his way to fellow TVA agents Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan) and Casey (Eugene Cordero). They begin talking about a Level 1 incursion that is taking place between universes 10005 and 1127. Mobius notes he doesn't remember reading about this incident on the scouting report, wondering if it slipped through the cracks. The conversation is cut short when O.B. notes that the two Earths are firing missiles at each other. Things get worse for Mobius and the TVA when additional incursions begin. Mobius initially believes these are glitches in the system, only to watch as Earth-7355 and Earth-0557 are terminated in their incursion. Overall, they count 3000 universes experiencing incursions simultaneously. Their monitors confirm additional universes are no longer, with Earth-400083 listed as Terminated, while Earth-15886 and Earth-82111 are labeled as Destroyed. The new Avengers Endgame: Encore scene ends with O.B. saying, "The multiverse is collapsing." Doctor Doom Forges His Mask In Encore's Third Credits Scene, Changing Endgame's Original Tag The last of Avengers Endgame: Encore's new footage comes with a change to the movie's original final moment. Since the film was positioned as a sendoff to the original Avengers and Tony Stark in particular, the credits ended with the familiar sound of Tony Stark striking hammer to metal as he created his first Iron Man suit. Those sounds return in Avengers Endgame: Encore, with footage attached that connects to Victor Von Doom, not Tony Stark. The first ding of the hammer shows a glimpse of a hammer coming down to hit something. The second ding shows a mask being lifted, but its Doctor Doom's mask. A third ding then comes with a close-up of Doom now wearing that mask. Even if this was not the original intent of the hammer sounds from Endgame's credits, Encore cleverly repurposes them to connect to Doom, making it seem like this was the plan all along. Through these different scenes, we've gained additional insight into Doomsday. The takeaways include providing more context to specific arcs and storylines to confirming additional characters who will appear, assuming most of this footage is pulled directly from Doomsday versus being shot for Encore. It's now confirmed that Loki visits Steve and Peggy to help them, which has long been theorized. The TVA-focused scene explains why. Steve is not in his universe, so his actions should lead to him being hunted down by the organization. It appears that Loki helps Steve and Peggy avoid this fate, leading them to live their happy life together and start a family, as seen in Doomsday's trailers. However, Steve's new life could still result in multiversal trouble. Another huge reveal is the confirmation that Hulk is in Doomsday. This has been suspected for some time, but the nature of his role was less clear. Now we know Doom has taken him. Whether this is to remove Hulk from the equation for defending Earth-616 or to keep him under Doom's control (or both) remains to be seen. All we know with certainty is that Hulk will be in Doomsday in some capacity. Mobius, O.B., Casey, and Miss Minutes join Hulk as newly confirmed characters for Doomsday. The movie will include some glimpses at what the TVA is doing as the multiverse collapses, even if they appear ill-equipped to stop what is happening. That should include them having a healthy fear of what is happening to Loki as the multiverse unravels from his fingertips. Encore shows that universes are already dying as Doomsday begins. Earth-10005 has been the designation for the Fox X-Men universe before. The reality they are attacking, Earth-1127, is not one that is already known in the multiverse, though. As for the others that are referenced and destroyed: Earth-400083 is for Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, Earth-15886 is for 2015's Fant4stic, and Earth-82111 is where Captain Carter from What If...? is from. All in all, Avengers: Endgame's new footage does a lot to bring new information to light for Avengers: Doomsday. It also goes to show that Marvel is still holding back plenty of surprises in the latter's marketing campaign if these details have been left out so far.
