Avengers: Doomsday’s Version Of Thor Is Finally Confirmed By The Russo Brothers

Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo are bringing back a specific depiction of Thor. It’s been 15 years since Chris Hemsworth debuted as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor, and Avengers: Doomsday marks his 10th appearance as the Asgardian God of Thunder. Hemsworth reunited with directors Joe and Anthony Russo on the 2026 movie, who previously worked with the actor on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The filmmakers have confirmed that Thor jumping back into action in Doomsday will resemble how he was presented in one of those previous Marvel movies. In an interview with CBR, Joe Russo mentioned that while “every iteration” of Thor that Hemsworth has played has been “unique and challenging,” he believes that his “Avengers: Endgame performance was certainly him, I think, at his most vulnerable, most off-balance.” Anthony Russo agreed, describing the actor portraying the overweight and traumatized Thor in Endgame as “remarkable.” However, he then clarified that Avengers: Doomsday’s version of the superhero will harken back to his depiction in Infinity War, explaining: It's fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has. He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That's what we're going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor. Regarding Thor’s mental state in the upcoming Marvel movie, Joe Russo said that audiences will see the “sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle.” This new journey will see him fighting “the greatest foe he’s ever met,” i.e. Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who was shown easily repelling one of Thor’s attacks in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Thor will clash with Doom during his effort to find Love, his missing adopted daughter who was introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder. At the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, Thor watched both his brother, Loki, and best friend, Heimdall, being killed by Thanos upon obtaining the Space Stone. Left for dead, the God of Thunder was found by the Guardians of the Galaxy, and he subsequently traveled to Nidavellir with Rocket and Groot to forge his Stormbreaker axe with the dwarf king Eitiri. Thor nearly died creating the weapon, and while he came close to killing Thanos with it, his blow wasn’t enough, and the Mad Titan was able to snap half of all living beings away with the six Infinity Stones. While it remains to be seen how Thor’s adversarial dynamic with Doctor Doom compares to his time fighting Thanos, the armored Latverian poses a threat to the entire multiverse in Avengers: Doomsday. As a result, the Avengers, New Avengers, and Wakandans from Earth-616 will team up with the Fantastic Four from Earth-828 and variations of the “original” X-Men from the Fox film series to battle Doom. Tom Hiddleston is also reprising the Loki variant who led his own Disney+ series, but it’s unclear if he’ll cross paths with Thor during this event spanning multiple universes. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on Friday, December 18, and Avengers: Secret Wars will continue this storyline when it's released on December 17, 2027.
