The beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally returning this week with new episodes on Paramount+ for the first time in over a decade. Though the original series ended in 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender has endured long past that. It's now widely considered one of the best animated TV shows ever made, and it spawned a franchise unto itself. The Last Airbender has even been growing in recent years. Just this year, there was the second season of Netflix's live-action remake of the original series, the franchise's first movie in Avatar Aang, and a new video game in Avatar Legends. While The Last Airbender as a franchise has been very prolific this year, Paramount hasn't given the franchise any new episodes. Netflix's show is a remake, Avatar Aang uses established characters in a movie format, and Avatar Legends is a self-contained spinoff game. One upcoming The Last Airbender series, however, is finally ready to give the franchise new episodes, and it's coming later this week. Avatar: Seven Havens is set to be the first original show the franchise has produced in over a decade. The upcoming series follows Pavi, the next Avatar after Korra, on an all-new adventure. Best of all, fans of The Last Airbender won't have to wait long for Pavi's story to start. Avatar: Seven Havens Debuts On Paramount+ On Friday Avatar: Seven Havens is set to premiere on Paramount+ this Friday, October 9. What's more, Paramount is also planning to split the difference between a weekly release schedule and releasing the entire season in a single batch. The first three episodes of Seven Havens will all be available to stream at the same time. The following two weeks will also see three new episodes released, with the final week, October 30, seeing the season's final four episodes released together. Avatar: Seven Havens Release Schedule Episode # Release Date (Fridays on Paramount+) 1-3 October 9 4-6 October 16 7-9 October 23 10-13 October 30 As that October 9 premiere date draws nearer, Paramount and Avatar Studios have also revealed more information about Seven Havens. The show will follow Pavi, the Earthbending Avatar after Korra. Pavi lives in a world that has been all but destroyed, and where its residents view the Avatar as a destructive force rather than a peaceful one. That perception likely has something to do with Korra, who appears in a flashback in the trailer for Seven Havens. Pavi will also be joined by new friends, like an Airbender named Jae who serves as her mentor, and an animal companion named Geet. In a first for the franchise, Pavi also reportedly has a long-lost twin sister, Nisha. How twins affect the Avatar Cycle of rebirth remains to be seen, but it's clear that Seven Havens is gearing up to change fundamental parts of The Last Airbender as a franchise. Seven Havens Is The First All-New Avatar Content In Over A Decade Image By Joshua Fox Perhaps the most exciting part of Seven Havens is the fact that it's the first all-new entry in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise in over a decade. As previously mentioned, the franchise's most recent efforts have been treading very familiar territory. Netflix's live-action show is a remake, Avatar Legends doesn't have much of a story to begin with, and the franchise hasn't introduced a new Avatar since The Legend of Korra, which ended in 2014. The most original Last Airbender project in recent years, the Avatar Aang movie, is also rehashing some old content. Most notably, the movie's cast is almost entirely made up of characters from the original show, like Aang and the rest of Team Avatar. Avatar Aang's story also touches on plot points that The Legend of Korra already explored in depth, like non-Benders rising up against Benders; Korra called them the Equalists, while Aang called them the Denied. Seven Havens, on the other hand, is poised to bring The Last Airbender into uncharted territory for the first time since The Legend of Korra ended. Pavi and her friends are all-new characters, the show's world is drastically different and more post-apocalyptic, and even the role of the Avatar is unique. Most importantly, it's pushing forward into the Avatar timeline for the first time in years. Avatar: Seven Havens should be a chance to tell a bold new story and get The Last Airbender out of the rut it has been in for over a decade.
