Avatar: How Sokka Died After The Last Airbender Ended (& When)

Sokka was only 15 years old during the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and around a decade older in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, but when and how did he die before The Legend of Korra? After he and his sister Katara found Aang, the titular last Airbender, Sokka's life was forever changed. He left the Southern Water Tribe behind to help Aang defeat the Fire Nation and stop the Hundred Year War. He became an expert fighter, courageous leader, and loyal ally during this time, despite Avatar: The Last Airbender only depicting less than a year of Sokka's life. A big takeaway from Avatar: The Last Airbender's sequel series, The Legend of Korra, is that it allows fans of the former to discover what happened to some of their favorite characters. The audience gets to spend some time with Katara, Toph, and Zuko as elderly heroes, and find out tidbits regarding the legacies of Aang and Sokka. Naturally, Aang's legacy is more prevalent in the sequel series because of Korra's connection to him as the Avatar, much like Korra's is in Avatar: Seven Havens. However, Sokka is left predominantly absent from The Legend of Korra, raising questions about what became of him. Thanks to some scenes in The Legend of Korra and other canon material that has been released after Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka's later life has been explored. Once the world became peaceful, Sokka returned to the Southern Water Tribe, as highlighted in the 2026 feature film, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. Although he had some more adventures with Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph, Sokka eventually became the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe and served on the United Republic Council, which The Legend of Korra showcases in flashbacks. Beyond these brief scenes, however, details about Sokka's life are slightly harder to come by, and that includes the details surrounding his death. The last known sighting of Sokka came in 158 AG, when he was 74 years old. In The Legend of Korra season 3, the Avatar becomes the target of an anarchist group named the Red Lotus. Zuko, who appears in the show, explains that he and Sokka defended Korra from the group when she was a baby, imprisoning them shortly after. However, by the time The Legend of Korra's main story takes place in 170 AG, 12 years after the battle with the Red Lotus, Sokka had passed away. Ultimately, Sokka died sometime between 158 and 170 AG, with no extended Avatar projects exploring exactly when or how. That said, Sokka's death is believed to be natural, as he was already 74 when he saved Korra from the Red Lotus. Given that an exact cause of death remains a mystery, it is safe to assume Sokka passed from old age before The Legend of Korra began. Why Sokka's Death Isn't Detailed In The Legend Of Korra The lack of concrete information on Sokka's death is the direct result of his limited role in The Legend of Korra. He only appeared in a few flashbacks, with series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealing that there needed to be a dedicated reason to explore what happened to Sokka after The Last Airbender. In an interview with ScreenCrush, DiMartino said, "Bringing back the old characters is fun to do, but there has to be a specific story reason why they're back." In the same interview, Konietzko mentioned that the shorter episode count on Legend of Korra meant there wasn't as much time to include history that wasn't relevant to Korra's story. As a result, Sokka's future after The Last Airbender did not receive much attention, as many of his friends, not him, were linked directly to Korra's journey. As the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to expand, the franchise could place more of a focus on Sokka, exploring exactly how and when he passed away. Until then, though, a broad estimate based on The Legend of Korra is the best that can be provided.
