ATLETICO MADRID stunned their fierce rivals to take a 2-0 win in the Madrid Derby. Jose Mourinho and Co were outfoxed by Diego Simeone‘s side, with some help from the intervention of VAR. And Jonathan David tucked home a decisive second minutes later to seal the three points, despite a late comeback scare courtesy of Antonio Rudiger‘s consolation. Atletico were perhaps lucky to head back down the tunnel with a full 11-men. Ex-Spurs star Cristian Romero could well have seen red for his studs-up challenge on Jude Bellingham. But after consulting the pitchside monitor, referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias decided a yellow card was more appropriate for the clumsy collision. He was not so forgiving when Huijsen pulled back Simeone in the area early in the second period. He pointed to the spot and issued the Spain international a yellow card. Grimaldo tucked his penalty nonchalantly to the keeper’s left to break the deadlock and give the visitors a mountain to climb. David then met a Simeone cross unmarked in the middle of the penalty area, tapping into an open goal to really take control of the fixture. He was subsequently hooked for controversial figure Julian Alvarez, who was jeered and whistled on his way onto the pitch. And despite a warm welcome from his team-mates, fans apparently weren’t over his indiscretions, with Simeone left “livid” at his own fans’ antics. The atmosphere in the ground got all the more grim when Antonio Rudiger thumped home a headed effort to get his side back in the running in the 89th minute. He arrived to his post-match press conference with a sheet showing pictures of Romero’s challenge on Bellingham, as well as another studs-up challenge by Lee Kang-In which went unnoticed by VAR. He went on to say: “It’s all been very strange. “The referee was known a week in advance… and he isn’t an international referee, which suggests he isn’t exactly a top-tier official. “The poor guy came here and couldn’t handle the pressure.” The club as a whole clearly agreed with their managers’ sentiments, with the club’s official match report reading: “Real Madrid lost at the Metropolitano in a derby marked by the poor officiating of Ortiz Arias.” Comment now
