Ather Konarc to get metal body, set to become brand's most affordable scooter

Ather's upcoming Konarc electric scooter will be the brand's most affordable model and its first to feature a metal body, as it takes on India's mass-market electric scooter segment.Ather Energy’s upcoming electric scooter, the Konarc, will feature a metal body, making it the first production Ather to use metal panels. Ather co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta confirmed the detail through a teaser video ahead of the scooter’s official unveiling on August 29. The Konarc will be the first production model based on Ather’s new EL platform and is expected to become the brand’s most affordable electric scooter.The move to a metal body is significant for Ather as it looks to move beyond its traditionally premium, technology-focused positioning and target the mass-market commuter electric scooter segment. Metal bodywork could also make the Konarc more familiar to buyers accustomed to conventional family scooters, while offering a stronger focus on durability and long-term ownership.Ather Konarc to rival iQube and ChetakThe Konarc is expected to be positioned below the Ather Rizta and 450 series in the company’s line-up. It is likely to compete with the likes of the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Ola S1 X, particularly their lower-end variants.Ather is expected to price the Konarc between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh, which would make it more accessible than the Rizta, currently priced from Rs 1.21 lakh, and the 450 series, which starts at Rs 1.28 lakh. The final prices will be announced at the launch. The scooter will also be Ather’s first model to feature a metal body, joining the Bajaj Chetak among mainstream electric scooters that use metal panels.Ather Konarc design and featuresThe production-ready Konarc appears to retain much of the design showcased by the earlier EL01 concept. It gets a handlebar-mounted headlamp, a vertically styled front apron and a wide, horizontal LED DRL stretching across the front fascia. Illuminated Ather lettering sits above the DRL, giving the scooter a distinctive front-end appearance. The Konarc will feature a 14-inch front wheel and a 12-inch rear wheel. Its design takes a more practical and family-oriented approach than the sportier Ather 450 series, with a long single-piece seat, spacious floorboard and upright riding position. Slim LED tail lamps are integrated into the rear bodywork, while alloy wheels and a front disc brake are expected to be offered.New EL platform to focus on affordabilityThe Konarc will be the first production scooter based on Ather’s newly developed EL platform. According to Tarun Mehta, the platform draws on nearly a decade of the company’s experience in electric mobility and has been developed with a greater focus on affordability, comfort, ease of ownership and everyday practicality.Ather is also targeting improvements in areas such as charging convenience, maintenance costs, safety and long-term ownership value. With the Konarc, the company aims to expand its customer base beyond technology enthusiasts and performance-oriented buyers and enter the high-volume commuter electric scooter market.The Ather Konarc will be officially unveiled at Ather Community Day on August 29.
