A group of 33 climbers were hit by avalanche – ten managed to escape and make their way down the mountain. More than 50 emergency workers were deployed in a huge search and ​rescue ⁠operation. The cause of the avalanche is not yet known, but one theory suggested that a hanging glacier in the area had partially collapsed. But efforts were being hampered by the danger of more snow slides and difficult terrain. The Bezengi Gorge stretches nine miles along the Russia-Georgia border. ⁠Mount Mizhirgi, in Kabardino-Balkaria, is one of the ​highest peaks in Russia’s North ​Caucasus region.
