Astros, Braden Shewmake Agree To Minor League Deal

Infielder Braden Shewmake is back with the Astros. The two sides agreed to a minor league contract earlier today, the team announced. The Excel Sports client elected free agency a few days ago after being designated for assignment by the Brewers and clearing waivers. It’ll be Shewmake’s second stint with Houston this season. The former Braves first-rounder appeared in 30 games with Houston and tallied 83 plate appearances, slashing .256/.272/.423 with three homers. He went 2-for-7 in four games with the Brewers before being cut loose. Shewmake is a glove-first shortstop who’s capable of playing all over the infield. He picked up some work at second base, third base and shortstop while the ‘Stros dealt with injuries to Jeremy Peña and Carlos Correa. In parts of three big league seasons, he’s totaled 165 plate appearances and recorded a .196/.206/.320 slash. The Astros will send Shewmake to their Triple-A Sugar Land affiliate for the time being. The former Texas A&M standout and Wylie, Texas native returns to his home state and will provide some surehanded infield depth for Houston. He’s a lifetime .240/.305/.382 hitter in parts of five Triple-A seasons. View Comments (1)
