Assam floods likely to worsen as IMD warns of heavy rain for next 24 hours

Even as floodwaters continue to recede across parts of Assam, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of another spell of heavy rainfall, raising concerns over fresh flooding and landslides in the state that is still recovering from one of this season's worst monsoon disasters.The latest forecast comes after floods claimed 78 lives and left more than three lakh people affected across several districts. (Photo: PTI) According to the IMD, Assam is among the states likely to receive widespread rainfall over the next 24 hours as active southwest monsoon conditions persist over northeastern India.The weather office has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places, with thunderstorms and lightning also likely in parts of the state. RAIN COULD DISRUPT RECOVERYThe renewed rain threat comes at a time when many flood-hit families are trying to return home as water levels gradually fall.However, damaged roads, thick deposits of mud and disrupted infrastructure continue to slow recovery operations in several affected areas.
