Asahi Linux Makes Progress On Gaming, More Apple Silicon Upstreaming

Given the recent Linux 7.3 upstream kernel release, the Asahi Linux project published a new status report to outline recent code they have upstreamed to the mainline kernel as well as other efforts taking shape in their downstream codebase. Now midway into Q4'2026, the Asahi Linux project outlined some recent accomplishments and other efforts underway in getting modern Apple Silicon hardware working on Linux: - Asahi Linux developers have continued upstreaming more code to the Linux kernel, as we continue to regularly cover on Phoronix. There has been recent upstreaming work around audio as well as the initial Device Trees for the Apple M4 Pro and Max and M5 appearing on the Linux kernel mailing list. - Apple M3 support is considered under general availability (GA) status now with the downstream Asahi Linux code. - The notable downside to the current Apple M3 support is the lack of GPU acceleration. Those reverse-engineering and working on the driver support for the Apple M3 have made some progress and have rendered a triangle but still there is a long road ahead. - Thunderbolt support for Apple Silicon with Linux is now out for review on the Linux kernel mailing list. - Gaming on Linux with Asahi is becoming more of a reality (well, on Apple M1/M2) when paired with the likes of EX and Wine. There's also progress on running games outside of their muvm for dealing with kernel page size differences: The performance though of running the more recent games on Asahi Linux is described as "patchy". More details on the recent Asaho Linux progress via the AsahiLinux.org blog.
