The Umbrella Academy was a remarkable Netflix show adapted from the comics written by Gerard Way, who is also known for his role as the frontman in the band My Chemical Romance, and some of the best moments of the series stem from this subtle connection. From including the band's music in the show to more subtle details that connect the aesthetic and humor, The Umbrella Academy regularly pays homage to MCR. However, one of the most devastating details that fans of both will pick up on before anyone else comes in season 3, when Sloane, a member of the Sparrow Academy who went on to marry Luther, is shown reading a travel book titled The Jetset Life. This is a clear nod to MCR's song, "The Jetset Life Is Gonna Kill You," which reveals the sad truth about Sloane's fate in the show. The Umbrella Academy Didn't Handle Sloane's Death At All Well At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, the Umbrellas and Sloane are transported to another point in time and space, where they quickly realize that for the most part, they are no longer together. In this reality, Luther runs off to search for his wife, and the season ends with a cliffhanger as to what the fate of Sloane and the others will be. While it would be fair for audiences to assume that this mystery would be picked up again in season 4, the show went in a very different direction during the divisive final season. Instead of resolving the narrative around Sloane, she is mentioned once in the final season, and then never again. Now, the creatives behind the show have suggested that this was in part due to the final season having fewer episodes than expected, and the narrative just didn't fit alongside everything else that they wanted to explore in the show's final outing, but it's incredibly disappointing to see how a clever nod and an Easter Egg was set up perfectly, only to drop the ball and ignore Sloane's story entirely. Despite this, the show does deserve relatively high praise for how effective it was in the earlier seasons, and in some ways, that is thanks to the band that Gerard Way spent decades performing in. The My Chemical Romance Vibe Set Netflix's The Umbrella Academy Apart In addition to Easter Eggs like The Jetset Life book, fans of My Chemical Romance will be able to pick up on plenty of other details in the show that feel familiar. For example, in season 1 and throughout the series, the use of black umbrellas becomes a significant part of the visual language of the show, and this connects in some ways to the music video for "Helena," which also prominently features black umbrellas. Again in season 1, there is a moment where a quote on Vanya's book can be seen to be attributed to Gerard Way. But more than that, the show's entire sense of humor is informed by a dark, quirky, and often morbid style that is very similar to both MCR's live music performances and the content of their library of songs. All of this makes perfect sense, because Gerard Way himself has spoken about how even the way he wrote the story about this large dysfunctional family was shaped by his experiences being a part of a rock band, which he described as being similar to a large dysfunctional family. As much as The Umbrella Academy stumbled at the final hurdle, and the last season of the show did not effectively resolve certain storylines, and the ending became a huge point of contention among fans, the series is still utterly unique. A superhero show that operates in a unique world that feels in line with the music and performances of My Chemical Romance as a whole.
