ARTE Europe Weekly: Does Europe need Turkey?

Despite its shift toward authoritarianism, Turkey is an important partner for the EU due to growing security dilemmas and its significant geostrategic value.Turkey has lots to offer Europe: help with migration, conflict mediation, and a rapidly growing defence industry. That’s why the EU seems to turn a blind eye to President Erdoğan’s disregard for human rights and the rule of law. But that balancing act comes at what cost to the EU’s credibility? This programme is produced by the European platform ARTE and available in 10 languages through the European media partnership BEAM. The hub is coordinated by ARTE and includes Balkan Insight (BIRN), Sinopsis (BIRN Romania), El País (ES), Gazeta Wyborcza (PL), Internazionale (IT), Ir (LV), Kathimerini (GR), Le Soir (BE) and Telex (HU). The partnership receives EU-funding following DG CNECT’s call for European Media Hubs within the framework of the EU’s Multimedia Actions.
