ARTE Europe Weekly: Are Closer Ties Between Canada and the EU Set to Last?

Brussels has confirmed its desire to explore an “associate membership” status for Ottawa.There’s visible chemistry between Canada and Europe. Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, attended Ursula von der Leyen’s ‘State of the Union’ address in Strasbourg this week – a first for a foreign head of government. There is talk of further rapprochement in what he has called a “unique alliance”, and with heated trade and geopolitical relations with the US, Canada is keen to seek stability through partnerships elsewhere. But what could closer ties bring for both sides – and how long will this warm embrace last?This programme is produced by the European platform ARTE and available in 10 languages through the European media partnership BEAM.
