Nonprofit The Art of Elysium will celebrate legendary rock photographer Henry Diltz at its upcoming gala on Dec. 12. The event, held at Hollywood’s Chaplin Studios, has tapped Diltz as its Heaven Visionary. As part of the honor, he will curate a one-night-only art installation representing his idea of heaven — in Diltz’s case, a lush environment reminiscent of Laurel Canyon and Woodstock where he shot many of his most recognizable photos. Diltz’s has photographed iconic artists and bands including America, The Doors, The Eagles, James Browne, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees and Neil Young. His work has appeared on a variety of album covers, cementing his legacy as one of the most celebrated photographers in rock history. “Henry has a remarkable gift for making people feel comfortable enough to reveal who they are, and that spirit is at the heart of The Art of Elysium’s work: bringing artists and communities together to create moments of connection and possibility,” Jennifer Howell, founder and CEO of The Art of Elysium, said in a statement. “We’re honored to have him as this year’s Heaven Visionary and support him as he brings his world to life at Chaplin Studios, where he shares a rich legacy of imagination and storytelling with the musicians who’ve created many of the world’s iconic recordings.” The event is being co-chaired by John Mayer, Alix and McG Nichol, Faryal Ganjehei and Sima Morrison. Musician Rain Phoenix — sister of Joaquin and River Phoenix — will also receive organization’s Spirit of Elysium honor for her work on behalf of the communities The Art of Elysium serves. Elijah Wood and Chris Holmes will hop into the booth as the night’s DJs. Funds raised during the evening will support the organization’s focus on helping people who are navigating illness, isolation, displacement, disability, emotional challenges and major life transitions with connection, belonging, dignity, participation and expression.
