Arsenal player ratings: Myles Lewis-Skelly shows why Gunners MUST keep him but Gabriel Jesus should be first out of door

MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY scored a crucial goal to see Arsenal’s pre-season end in victory over Como, with a 1-1 draw being decided by penalties after Alvaro Morata missed from the spot in the shootout. He opened the scoring by capitalising on a horrific piece of goalkeeping by Jean Butez in the Como goal, cushioning the ball with his head before planting it in the bottom left corner. Martin Baturina levelled things before half-time, with a wonderful cut onto his right foot before finding the roof of the net – something he seems to like doing to English fans after scoring against the Three Lions at the World Cup. With the score level at 1-1, a penalty shootout decided things This is how SunSport reporter Lloyd Canfield rated the players… KEPA ARRIZABALAGA – 6 Made one save in the first half before being replaced by David Raya. Wasn’t massively tested and couldn’t do an awful lot to stop Martin Baturina’s fine leveller. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS THEO JULIENNE – 6 The youngster was really impressive at right-back, offering composure on the ball and solidity in his tackling against a really exciting young winger in Assane Diao. Most read in Sport Found it more tricky against Martin Baturina when he moved to the left and some will blame him for the goal, but he was still impressive. MARLI SALMON – 8 Really solid at the back for such a young defender, he didn’t look any worse than Gabriel next to him, which is perhaps the biggest compliment you could pay him. Good on the ball, won more duels than any other Arsenal player, and always on hand to sweep up when his side needed him – plays like a defender twice his age. PIERO HINCAPIE – 6 Impressive on the ball at left back, but could have done more in terms of supporting Martinelli going forwards. Solid though at left back with a number of good tackles, interceptions and recoveries. MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY – 8 After a week full of rumours linking him with a move away from the Emirates, he formed a heart with his hands when he was gifted a goal by Como keeper Jean Butez. If Manchester United or Chelsea were watching this one, they might be a little more interested now after a good all-round midfield showing. Lewis-Skelly was brilliant throughout Credit: Getty EBERECHI EZE – 7 Played a slightly deeper midfield role than usual, but was still very involved going forwards, coming close with a free-kick early on and being at the heart of most good things from Arteta’s side. That was until he was hooked early on by Arteta and replaced by Fabio Vieira. MAX DOWMAN – 6 Really exciting to watch on the right side and you could see flashes of his quality and quick feet. He was well marshalled most of the time by two or three Como defenders, but still managed to impress in glimpses – it’s easy to forget he is so young. ETHAN NWANERI – 6 Looked really engaged early on with some great tackles and some really tidy footwork, but more often than not that final bit of end product evaded him. GABRIEL MARTINELLI – 7 Claimed the assist for Myles Lewis-Skelly‘s opening goal, but was good all round in his play today, with some silky dribbles and bursts of pace down the left side. Martinelli was impressive for Arsenal on the left Credit: Reuters GABRIEL JESUS – 4 Seemed to have missed a sitter early on, only to have his blushes spared by the offside flag anyway – that was until he too was hooked early on for Viktor Gyokeres. That was his only real chance, with limited involvement in the game, but he wasn’t overly impressive by any means. SUBS: VIKTOR GYOKERES (GABRIEL JESUS, 32) – 5 Didn’t do an awful lot while he was on the pitch, but he wasn’t on it for a very long time. A few decent bits of hold up play, but not much else to talk about without much support around him. FABIO VIEIRA (EBERECHI EZE, 32) – 5 Similarly to Gyokeres, he didn’t have an awful lot of time on the pitch to impress. A few decent passes and glimpses of his dribbling ability on the half turn, but nothing to write home about. BRUNO GUIMARAES (MAX DOWMAN, HT) – 7 Already a fan favourite at the Emirates after making a few tackles and some nice passes on his debut. Chants of “Bruno, Bruno, Bruno” could be heard loud and clear for their new dynamic midfield man, who anchored the Gunners midfield nicely with some great defensive play. Scored his penalty in the shootout too. Guimaraes looked the part on his debut Credit: PA DAVID RAYA (KEPA ARRIZABALAGA, HT) – 6 Did exactly what was expected of him, making a simple save in the second half and being good with his feet. CRISTHIAN MOSQUERA (GABRIEL, HT) – 6 Almost gave Arsenal the lead with an early second half header that was saved by Butez in the Como goal. Looked quick and sharp at the back, ready to step up in William Saliba‘s absence if called upon. MARTIN ODEGAARD (ETHAN NWANERI, HT) – 6 Kept things ticking for Arsenal but struggled a little in terms of creating chances for those around him. Plenty of good passing and a few nice dribbles but nothing in terms of the end product required to win his side the game. RICCIARDO CALAFIORI (MARLI SALMON, 60) – 6 Not really caused any problems at the back, but dealt with any Como threat nicely, perhaps should have been more involved going forward when his side needed a goal. KAI HAVERTZ (VIKTOR GYOKERES, 60) – 7 Came close to giving his side the lead in the second half, but no cigar with a left footed shot that fell wide of the post. Then thought he’d scored a last-gasp winner with a fine finish, only for the linesman to raise his flag and curtail the celebrations. Still, he was creative and caused more problems for Como than Gyokeres or Jesus. Kai Havertz thought he had settled it for Arsenal late on Credit: AFP MIKEL MERINO (PIERO HINCAPIE, 60) – 6 Plenty of touches, with some good passing and defensive contributions, but is another player who has match-winning moments in him who couldn’t find one today. NONI MADUEKE (FABIO VIEIRA, 60) – 6 Another who came close to finding a winner for Arsenal, but was just missing that end product required of him. He was more creative than most in this game with the ball at his feet, but played it safe a little too often. It felt like everyone in the stadium knew he was going to miss in the shootout. CHRISTOS TZOLIS (GABRIEL MARTINELLI, 60) – 6 Not overly impactful from the left, particularly when Martinelli had been quite exciting to watch in spells – didn’t see an awful lot of the ball. Gets a bonus point for his emphatic winning penalty. BEN WHITE (THEO JULIENNE, 60) – 6 Pretty much identical to Calafiori on the other side, solid defensively, but not showing enough going forward with the scores level.
