By all appearances, it required technologically advanced seafaring techniques that most researchers considered unlikely for the Paleolithic era.But recently, archaeologists have been piecing together a new and surprising answer: The ancient peoples of the Philippines and Island Southeast Asia were likely navigating open waters tens of thousands of years before anyone else.The archaeological evidence comes in the form of stone tools excavated at sites in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste, showing strong evidence that as far back as 40,000 years ago, there was a technological sophistication from these ancient seafarers that rivals much later civilizations. And new discoveries suggest the region’s maritime history stretches back even further.A sweeping genetic analysis published in late 2025 revealed that humans likely settled the landmass of Sahul—which included modern-day Australia and New Guinea—around 60,000 years ago. To get there, they had to make repeated, deliberate crossings between islands separated by open ocean. A few months later, archaeologists discovered a 67,800-year-old hand stencil in a Sulawesi cave, placing symbol-making humans right along that ancient northern migration corridor.In a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, researchers from Ateneo de Manila University challenge the accepted belief that Paleolithic technical progress was centered in Africa and Europe.It’s tricky to establish a precise timeline of the deep history of seafaring because the wood and organic fiber used to construct Paleolithic seacraft rarely survive in the archaeological record. These stone tools offer a new way in. Because the oldest surviving physical boat is only about 10,000 years old, researchers have to look for indirect clues. By examining microscopic wear on 40,000-year-old stone tools, the Ateneo de Manila team identified traces of plant processing. They argue these marks point to the “extraction of fibers necessary for making ropes, nets, and bindings essential for boatbuilding and open-sea fishing.”Add in the discovery of fishing hooks, gorges, net weights, and the remains of deep-ocean fish such as tuna and sharks, and these archeological sites paint a picture of a highly capable maritime culture.“The remains of large predatory pelagic fish at these sites indicate the capacity for advanced seafaring and knowledge of the seasonality and migration routes of those fish species,” the study authors wrote. The collection of fish and tool remains “indicates the need for strong and well-crafted cordage for ropes and fishing lines to catch the marine fauna.”As the archaeological finds point toward a sophisticated method of deep-ocean fishing, the study authors believe the ancient seafarers constructed boats from organic materials and held them together with plant-based ropes. That same rope technology was then adapted for actual fishing.Still, the researchers are careful to note the limits of the archaeological record. In early 2026, study co-author Alfred Pawlik publicly emphasized that no direct material evidence exists to show exactly what these 40,000-year-old vessels looked like.
