Apple TV has established itself as the definitive platform for sci-fi, taking on projects that were once considered "unadaptable" and giving a chance to new and ambitious shows that might need a little more time to find their audience. Some of the best recent sci-fi TV series are streaming on Apple TV, and after the success of Foundation took the platform to another level, Apple TV may be about to have another groundbreaking success with its adaptation of William Gibson's iconic novel, Neuromancer. Neuromancer has influenced countless sci-fi projects, including The Matrix, and is widely considered to be one of the founding works of the cyberpunk genre, even coining the term "cyberspace." The story follows Case, a hacker whose mysterious employer gives him a task that he must complete before time runs out and reactivates an old injury that would end his neural link to cyberspace. While Neuromancer is the best known of Gibson's works, the book is one of three in the flawless sci-fi book trilogy known as The Sprawl Trilogy. Neuromancer Needs At Least 3 Seasons To Complete The Sprawl Trilogy The events of The Sprawl Trilogy are standalone stories spaced out over 16 years, focusing on the personal journeys of several main characters, with the location being the common thread between them. The stories can technically be read in any order, but each builds on the events in the previous book. The upcoming show will have some of the deepest lore in a sci-fi TV series, as Gibson's books cover a futuristic world so dense that, despite multiple attempts at turning it into a movie, Neuromancer has been considered unadaptable until now. The teaser trailer for Apple TV's Neuromancer series looks so good that we already want more. The ten-episode show will only be an adaptation of the first book in The Sprawl Trilogy, leaving two thirds of the expansive tale without a screen equivalent. In order to tell the full story, Neuromancer needs at least two more seasons, which could cover the remaining two books, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. However, there is even more potential in Gibson's work, as his universe incorporates more than just The Sprawl Trilogy. William Gibson is working as an executive producer on Apple TV's Neuromancer series. The titular "Sprawl" refers to an enormous megacity that extends over most of America's East coast, and there is more to this setting than just the trilogy containing Neuromancer. Gibson has written other short stories set within The Sprawl, and these would provide the perfect opportunity for spinoff series, giving Apple TV a flagship sci-fi franchise with the potential to last for years, reinforcing its status as the definitive place to stream sci-fi masterpieces. Neuromancer Already Looks Good Enough To Make 3 Seasons A Realistic Goal A common trend in trailers is to over-explain, wih many trailers resembling miniature versions of the project by giving away key plot points and defining scenes. However, the Neuromancer trailer has given just enough away to be intriguing, inroducing Case (Callum Turner) as "the best console man around," before focusing on the show's tone and aesthetic. Some book fans have expressed concern, but Gibson has a relaxed approach to adaptations compared with other authors, ressuring fans through Bluesky that “anyone who doesn’t see how very satisfied I’ve been throughout production doesn’t get what I most want out of an adaptation." The trailer also includes scenes that hint at the possibilty of Gibson's world expanding, and while this could be part of a collaborative effort to add unexpected elements to Neuromancer, Apple TV's track record with sci-fi could hint that there is more on the horizon. Having adapted Foundation, previously considered unfilmable, and taken on shows like Severance and Pluribus, Apple TV appears to renew its sci-fi TV shows more regularly than other platforms. This makes the platform the best home for Neuromancer, and the best chance to see the entire Sprawl Trilogy onscreen.
