Apple TV’s Hit 50-Episode Sci-Fi Series Gets “Ambitious” Ending Tease From Star

Apple TV has released several sci-fi shows over the years, including Severance, Silo, and Dark Matter, but For All Mankind has been around the longest, having premiered in 2019. Earlier this year, Apple announced that the upcoming sixth season would serve as the show's farewell, and production concluded in August. Now Mireille Enos, who plays Celia Boyd on For All Mankind, is giving some insight into what she and her co-stars experienced during the final season. During an interview with Collider, the actress admitted that the cast was sitting "on tenterhooks as the scripts would come in" because they knew that the producers and writers had a heavy "responsibility on their shoulders" to get the ending just right. Enos acknowledged it's hard to finish a multi-season series on a high note; not every show does it well. But when it comes to For All Mankind, the writers "stick the landing. They manage to make it hopeful and magical and ambiguous enough, and find really lovely closure for these important characters." She added that "it's a very satisfying finish." "All of us kind of sat on tenterhooks as the scripts would come in, and we would see the guys, and we could feel the responsibility on their shoulders. They were walking around heavy because it’s a project that is really close to their hearts. They love these characters and this world, and it’s hard to finish something well. I mean, they do it. They do it really good. They stick the landing. They manage to make it hopeful and magical and ambiguous enough, and find really lovely closure for these important characters that some of them the audience has been watching for their whole long trajectory of their lives. Yeah, it’s a very satisfying finish." For All Mankind tells a hypothetical story of what would have happened if the space race continued. Each season takes place in a different decade, starting in the 1960s and 1970s and moving forward to the 2010s with the most recent installment. The series has been a hit with critics since the very beginning. After For All Mankind debuted with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, each subsequent season has earned a score in the range of 90% to 100%, with the show as a whole averaging 91%. For All Mankind has also won multiple awards over the past five years, including at the Creative Arts Emmys, Saturn Awards, and Producers Guild of America Awards. The cast includes Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten, Wrenn Schmidt, Krys Marshall, Cynthy Wu, Coral Peña, Edi Gathegi, Toby Kebbell, Svetlana Efremova, Costa Ronin, Sean Kaufman, Ruby Cruz, and Ines Asserson. Enos wasn't an original cast member but joined during For All Mankind season 5. Before that, she starred in Big Love, The Killing, The Catch, Hanna, Good Omens, and Lucky Hank. Enos has a brand-new crime thriller called American Hostage coming to MGM+ on September 20, and then she'll be seen in the final season of For All Mankind. The success of For All Mankind led Apple to launch a spinoff this spring called Star City, which goes back in time to tell the story from the point of view of the Soviet Union. Like its predecessor, Star City has also garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Apple has yet to renew it for a second season, so until there's an announcement, fans have one more season of For All Mankind to look forward to sometime in 2027. According to Enos, fans will be very satisfied with how the series wraps up, even if they have to wait several more months to see it unfold on screen.
