Apple phasing out full Rosetta support in upcoming macOS updates | Photo Credit: Reuters Apple has released updated guidance regarding Intel-based application compatibility on Apple silicon Macs, detailing upcoming changes to its Rosetta translation software. While Rosetta currently allows Intel-designed applications to run seamlessly on Apple silicon across macOS 27 and earlier, Apple announced that starting with macOS 28, Rosetta’s functionality will be significantly reduced. Going forward, its support will be limited strictly to select older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. To maintain optimal system performance, Apple recommends that users transition to native software. Mac owners should replace legacy Intel apps with “Universal” or “Apple silicon” releases available through the Mac App Store, developer websites, or built-in app updaters. To help users prepare, Apple highlighted ways to identify Intel-based apps. In Finder, selecting an app and pressing Command-I displays its information, where the “Kind” section will indicate Application (Intel). Alternatively, on macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, users can navigate to System Settings > General > About and click Details next to Intel-based Apps. For users currently operating supported macOS versions, Rosetta can be installed automatically when opening an Intel-based app and clicking Install when prompted. Alternatively, users can install Rosetta using the Terminal command. Published - October 28, 2026 01:54 pm IST
