Apple today announced that it is lowering its standard App Store commission in Taiwan, following discussions with the country’s Fair Trade Commission. Here are the details. New rules take effect October 31 Over the past year or so, Apple has faced mounting regulatory pressure on several of its App Store practices and rules worldwide, particularly those related to app distribution, payment processing, commission fees, and alternative options for developers. In Japan and Brazil, in response to local competition rules and investigations, the company introduced alternative app marketplaces, third-party payment options, and revised commission structures. In the European Union, Apple recently overhauled its App Store fees and business terms to address concerns raised by the European Commission following a lengthy back-and-forth over its compliance with the Digital Markets Act. Just last week, an Australian federal judge ordered Apple to allow alternative app distribution and payment methods following its years-long legal battle with Epic Games. Apple plans to appeal. And yesterday, South Korean regulators fined Apple approximately $15.5 million and ordered changes to its App Store policies over payment restrictions, app review practices, and discriminatory commissions. Now, Taiwan is joining that list, though the changes announced today are considerably narrower. Apple today informed developers that, starting this Saturday, October 31, its standard commission on paid apps and in-app purchases will drop from 30% to 26% in the Taiwanese iOS and iPadOS App Store. Apple said the change follows discussions with the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission, and added that “signing the updated terms by October 31 is not required to receive the benefit of these commission rate changes starting that date.” The company also updated its Apple Developer Program License Agreement to reflect the new terms, with translated versions expected to be available within the next month. Update: In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said: “We’re making updates to the Taiwan storefront of the App Store following constructive discussions with the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission. These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to providing developers with a thriving marketplace and ensuring the App Store remains the safest, most trusted platform for users. We will continue to equip developers with the tools, resources, and support they need to build, grow, and scale successful businesses on the App Store.” Worth checking out on Amazon Apple Watch Series 12 | Ultra 4 Apple HomeView Apple TV 4K (2026) AirPods Pro 3 | AirPods 5 AirTag (2nd Generation) – 4 Pack MacBook Neo Logitech MX Master 4 FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.
