AI can write in seconds, yet Anthropic is offering a writer up to Rs 3.25 crore. As some writers lose clients to automation, the job raises a bigger question: what makes human writing valuable?Anthropic's Rs 3.25-crore writer job reveals why AI still needs humans (AI generated image)New Delhi,Oct 25, 2026 13:02 ISTAI can write an email in seconds, draft a blog post in minutes and help companies produce content at a scale that once required entire teams. For many writers, that has raised an uncomfortable question: what happens when the work they are paid to do becomes easier for machines to perform?Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has an intriguing answer. It is advertising a senior writing role with an annual salary of $295,000 to $345,000, or approximately Rs 3.25 crore at the upper end. But this is not a job for someone simply churning out articles. The company wants a professional with at least eight years of high-level executive communications experience. The opening highlights a contradiction at the heart of the AI boom. While some writers are losing clients to AI-generated content, companies building these tools are still willing to pay experienced communicators substantial sums. The question is not simply whether AI can write. It is what kind of writing expertise companies will continue to value, and who might be left behind. WHY AN AI COMPANY IS PAYING SO MUCH FOR A WRITERThe Anthropic position involves working with senior leaders, preparing communications for important public engagements and explaining complex developments to different audiences. It also requires strategic thinking and the ability to respond when breaking news demands a quick, considered response. That is a different proposition from producing routine website copy or product descriptions. The role requires someone who can understand the subject, anticipate how a message might be received and help leaders decide what needs to be communicated. Anthropic is not alone. In September 2025, OpenAI advertised a content strategy role paying nearly $4 lakh annually. The position involved shaping ChatGPT's brand voice, developing content and working with engineers and designers. The two openings do not prove that writing jobs are becoming more lucrative across the board. They do, however, highlight the value some AI companies place on experienced professionals who can combine writing with strategy, audience understanding and communication skills.THE WRITERS WHO ARE ALREADY LOSING WORKThere is another side to this story. In June 2023, a story of a content writer who lost client contracts after ChatGPT became an alternative to the work he produced came to light. The writer worked on website copy and product descriptions, illustrating the pressure AI-generated content can place on routine writing assignments. The contrast with Anthropic's recruitment drive is striking. A senior communications professional with specialised experience may command a substantial salary, while a freelancer producing routine copy can find it harder to justify charging for work that AI tools can generate quickly. This does not mean all entry-level writing jobs are disappearing or that every senior writing role is protected. It does suggest that the impact of AI will depend partly on the tasks involved, the expertise required and what clients are willing to pay for.WHEN AI WRITES THE FIRST DRAFT, WHO CHECKS IT?Generating content is only part of the process. Someone still needs to establish whether the information is accurate, whether important context is missing and whether the final message is appropriate for its audience. We explored this issue in a September 2025 report on people being paid to correct AI-generated content. The report highlighted work involving the correction and improvement of machine-generated drafts.Such work creates opportunities for people who can evaluate AI output rather than simply accept it. But it would be premature to assume that editing and fact-checking jobs are immune to automation. AI tools can also assist with these tasks, potentially changing how much human work is required. For writers, the distinction is becoming increasingly important. Knowing how to generate a draft is useful; knowing when that draft is wrong, misleading or unsuitable is a different skill.WHAT THIS MEANS FOR ASPIRING WRITERSAnthropic's salary offer should not be mistaken for a promise that writing is a secure or increasingly lucrative career. The position is senior, specialised and designed for someone with years of relevant experience. For people entering journalism, content creation or corporate communications, the challenge is to build skills beyond grammar and sentence construction. Research, fact-checking, subject knowledge, critical thinking and an understanding of audiences can help writers produce work that goes beyond a generic AI-generated draft.Learning to use AI tools responsibly may also matter. Writers who can combine the speed of these tools with independent research, editorial judgement and original thinking may be better equipped to adapt as workplaces change.Ultimately, one expensive job listing cannot settle the debate over whether AI will replace writers. But it does raise a more useful question: as machines become better at producing words, will the real value of a writer lie increasingly in the judgement behind them?- Ends
