Anthony Joshua's driver was attempting to overtake when he crashed, killing two of the boxer's friends, court hears

The driver of a car carrying Anthony Joshua was attempting an overtake manoeuvre when it crashed, killing two of the British boxer's friends, a court has heard. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, has denied charges that include causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver's licence. The court in Nigeria was told that last December the group – who had been travelling to visit Joshua's father in Ogun State, near Lagos – were asleep when Kayode lost control of the car. While behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV, he attempted to overtake a moving truck but collided with a parked lorry. The horrifying crash left Joshua's personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, dead. The former world heavyweight champion, 36, was rushed to hospital in the African country after the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun. Meanwhile a second defendant, 35-year-old Abubakar Adamu – the driver of the stationary lorry the Lexus crashed into – denies a charge against him of obstructing the free flow of traffic, the BBC reported. Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that both vehicles had been removed from the scene by the time he arrived. The only items that were recovered from the Lexus were a logbook, some painkillers and an energy drink, which were all found near the driver's side, the official said. The court also heard that police have yet to take a statement from the British boxer, despite it being eight months since the crash happened. During cross-examination, Kayode's lawyer asked Ajayi why this was the case. Ajayi claimed that he hadn't contacted Joshua as he 'didn't have his number'.The trial has been adjourned until September 10. Following the collision, Joshua paid tribute to his friends on social media, writing: 'I didn't even realise how special they are.
