Anson Mount Teases Black Bolt & Inhumans MCU Return Potential After Conversations With Kevin Feige

Published Jul 29, 2026, 8:15 PM EDT Anson Mount reveals how his comeback as Black Bolt in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness happened, and the potential for him to reprise the King of the Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before he revitalized Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Mount led Marvel's Inhumans, Marvel's ill-fated TV series about superpowered outcasts living on the moon. Anson reprising Black Bolt in 2022's Doctor Strange sequel was a pleasant surprise. Although it was a Black Bolt from another MCU timeline, it was a triumphant return for Mount to play his superhero on the big screen. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for our exclusive cover story profile, Anson Mount revealed that "an unexpected phone call from Kevin Feige himself" came with an offer to return as Black Bolt in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Mount says that Feige made it clear that he would play an alternate reality Black Bolt from Earth-838. Anson Mount: "The phone call was basically, "Hey, would you like to come and reprise this role that got canceled and let us pay you a lot of money?" I was like, "Sure, man." And I had a wonderful time. The best part about it was working with Sam Raimi. What a bucket list item for me. I've been a huge fan of his my entire life. And he was such a wonderful guy and so incredibly collaborative. He brought me into the process to figure out the emotional arc for Black Bolt and to figure out what would be the one word for him to say. We had a long conversation about that. I fought for that, and he finally agreed that he thought it was a good idea. And I was extremely grateful. Kevin's a big Star Trek fan. So what I did is I got our props department to put together a framed honorary commission to the Enterprise and named him Lieutenant Commander. Rebecca and I both signed it, and had a badge attached to it and mailed it to him. He called me and said there might have been a few tears shed as I opened that. ScreenRant: If Akiva [Goldsman] and Henry [Alonso Myers] called you and said, "We got an idea to reboot Inhumans," would you be in? Anson Mount: Yeah. My philosophy in this business has been to walk through the open door, and it's served me pretty well thus far. So yeah, of course. I would have some ideas. ScreenRant: You have ideas for Black Bolt and the Inhumans? Anson Mount: I do. I do. Yeah. Kevin and I had a couple of conversations, and they have bigger fish to fry than that, but you never say no. ScreenRant: Can I ask how recently the conversations were? Anson Mount: Not too recent, but post-Doctor Strange. After starring as series lead Cullen Bohannon on Hell on Wheels, Anson Mount joined Marvel's TV universe, heading up Inhumans. Unfortunately, Inhumans was maligned by audiences and critics, garnering an 11% Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite Mount's heroic efforts portraying the silent Black Bolt, whose voice is so powerful that it can shatter mountains, Inhumans was a high-profile disaster for Marvel. Playing Black Bolt again in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was sweet redemption for Mount, even if the King of the Inhumans was killed off by the villainous Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). In the MCU's Sacred Timeline, however, Black Bolt is still alive. Anson's conversations with Kevin Feige presumably keep the door open for Black Bolt's comeback, especially now that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has wrapped filming its series finale. Mount's stock is sky-high after five seasons of leading Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, one of the most acclaimed Star Trek series on Paramount+. Anson is open to playing Black Bolt again, especially in the fanciful scenario ScreenRant pitched where Strange New Worlds' executive producers Goldsman and Myers rebooted Inhumans. That Black Bolt's only line in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, "I'm sorry," was something Anson Mount fought for in collaboration with director Sam Raimi, is also a fascinating revelation. Mount still thinks about Black Bolt and would don his black suit again, so maybe the Inhumans' silent king still has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
