Anna, MGR, NTR, Vijay: TVK chief counts himself among Tamil Nadu heavyweights

It was an all-out political offensive by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay in the Assembly on Monday. He took on the Opposition on multiple fronts in a combative performance, while also making perhaps his clearest statement yet on how he wants his own political rise to be placed.In a crafted one-line statement, Vijay sought to place his emergence alongside three of the most consequential political disruptions in South India -- CN Annadurai, MG Ramachandran in Tamil Nadu and NT Rama Rao's political breakthroughs in undivided Andhra Pradesh.Following a series of attacks on the Opposition, Vijay declared, "1967, 1977, 1982, 2026 -- Anna, MGR, NTR, Vijay".The line was more than political rhetoric. Vijay was seeking to give historical meaning to his rise and frame the 2026 election as a political rupture rather than merely a change of government. By invoking Annadurai, MGR and NTR together, he presented himself as the latest in a lineage of charismatic leaders who emerged outside established political structures and succeeded in reshaping the political order. In the Assembly, Vijay simultaneously attacked the DMK, defended his government's position on corruption allegations and warned that his party would subject the Opposition's own political history to scrutiny.Responding to what he described as defamatory attacks by the DMK, Vijay said his party would not retaliate in the same manner. "No matter what defamatory things the DMK says about us, we are not the kind of people who will stoop to that level," he said.But he immediately followed that with a warning to the Dravidian party that his government would look far beyond the present political contest."But we will do one thing. We will go below half a century, dig deep, investigate everything and bring it all out.
