Animal Crossing Meets Studio Ghibli In Cozy New Game

She started out in the MMO scene with Pando Media Booster and now dives into everything gaming at Screen Rant. She's a lifelong gamer, a relentless industry sleuth, and a passionate follower of everything happening in the games industry. If you're craving that Animal Crossing aesthetic with a touch of Studio Ghibli charm thrown in, one new game might be right up your alley. Cozy games these days are a dime a dozen, which is great news for the cozy gaming community. On the other hand, this overabundance of coziness also makes it hard to know which titles are worth your time. One recently released game deserves to be in the spotlight, for managing to capture a great balance between cute style and perfectly cozy feel. With no new Animal Crossing announcement in sight, and recent Studio Ghibli taking a darker turn, you can count on this game to be a warm hug that brings in the best elements from both worlds. Woodo Is A Meditative Puzzle Game Great For Ghibli Fans The bucolic setting, sweet story and adorable characters make Woodo feel like it's a tale straight from older Ghibli titles, like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. This delightful game is called Woodo, and was developed by Tiny Monk Tales and published by Daedalic Entertainment on September 16. The game feels like a mix between a meditative coloring book and a wooden puzzle, where every piece is made of hand-carved wood. Your task is to restore blank white dioramas to their full color by filling them in piece by piece. The title screen itself is the tutorial, and presents the simple controls and premise: You're presented with a tableau to restore using the missing puzzle pieces to the right of the main game area. Place each item in its corresponding spot in the game area to fill it with color, texture, and movement. You can rotate and explore the scene, and as you do, the pieces will rotate along with the environment, giving you a clue about where to find their correct location. As you fill in bits of the delightful illustrations, you unlock detailed mini-scenes like a picnic basket full of a garden harvest found in a cute kitchen set for breakfast. Areas you restore are brought to life through animations that trigger every time you move your cursor over them: a dragonfly flaps its wings, a bird does a little shimmy and looks around, a cup fills and empties of its contents. The experience is very tactile, and placing each piece into its right place feels like you're really holding and assembling a wooden toy. As an added fun surprise, tiny monk dolls are hidden throughout the scenes, and finding them is a playful additional (and completely optional) goal. If you're stuck, you can use the hint system as much as you want, completely removing any potential stressors from the experience. My partner-in-coziness Carrie Lambertsen has also tried the game and remarks that: "It’s a game I will come back to multiple times for the calming effect it has." In fact, only days after completing it, she was already thinking about replaying it. That's because Woodo makes it easy to fall into a zen-like state as you relax and search for where every item belongs. Woodo's Charming Characters Will Win Over AC Fans As you progress through Woodo, you reveal the accompanying story. An unseen narrator named Foxy recalls the summer they moved to the countryside as a child. We see her younger self as a big-eared fox and her friend Ben as a cute frog—two designs that wouldn't look out of place in an Animal Crossing title. The narrator explains how she came from a world of technology and screens, and hated living in the countryside at first. As you move through different scenes from the past—enhanced, by her own admission, with a touch of whimsy and magic—you uncover a tale about childhood, time, and friendship, More than that, it becomes a story about Foxy appreciating the world around her and growing to love her new home. And it may just help you find that sense of adventure that we sometimes lose as we get older. Anyone searching for a game that lets you turn your mind off, relax, and enjoy some wonderfully whimsical illustrations, will find it in Tiny Monk Tales' new game. Woodo is out now on PC (via Steam), PS 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
