Industry Minister Blair McDougall said: “Britain invented the modern motor industry and we’re determined to ensure the next generation of vehicles are designed and built here too.” Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Officials at the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade said the funding would support 1,800 jobs directly as well as thousands more in the supply chain. But Conservative Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden said: “Andy Burnham could have broken with Ed Milliband’s disastrous net zero obsession by taking on the Conservatives’ detailed plan for drivers including abolishing the ZEV mandate, saving the British car industry and its supply chain from extinction. “Instead, Labour are ploughing on with a policy that car makers publicly and privately have labelled existential for the sector. “Talking up minor details of already announced research and development is great, but against the context of Labour’s war on motorists, it won’t be sufficient to stop Burnham and his pals from dealing a hammer blow to the British motor industry.” Comment now
