Andrew Garfield’s Explosive Spider-Man Sinister Six Spinoff Unearthed In New Concept Art

New concept art has surfaced providing an explosive look at the scrapped Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six. In the days of the Amazing Spider-Man film series, Sony Pictures developed several projects to expand the franchise centered on Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. Sinister Six was among them, with the spotlight pointed on the title supervillain team that was introduced in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1. Though this spinoff never materialized, one of the people who’d been working on it has provided a peek at what was planned for the canceled Sinister Six. Illustrator Victor Martinez shared concept art on Instagram depicting an unmasked Spider-Man falling midair and dodging missiles being launched at him from an island with a volcano. Although Martinez didn’t outright mention Sinister Six in this post, he did write in the caption that this “unmade/untitled Spider-Man film from years ago” he’d worked on “would've been a fun one with lots of villains… 6 to be exact!… iykyk.” Martinez also shouted out costume designer Constantine Sekeris and production designer Martin Whist, who were involved with the project as well. The end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 teased the Sinister Six’s formation when Michael Massee’s Gustav Fiers, a.k.a. The Gentleman, walked down a hallway at OsCorp containing weaponry and technology belonging to various Spidey villains. Along with the Rhino suit, which was provided to Paul Giamatti’s Aleksei Sytsevich after he was broken out of prison, Doctor Octopus’ arms and Vulture’s wings were glimpsed. Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio were also teased during the sequel’s end credits. Initially, it was believed that the Sinister Six movie would spotlight Rhino, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, and Mysterio being led by Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn, a.k.a. Green Goblin. However, this lineup was never officially confirmed, and leaked emails later revealed that Sinister Six director Drew Goddard intended to include Sandman as part of the lineup. Additionally, Goddard reportedly envisioned Doc Ock leading the team instead. While none of these villains are glimpsed in the artwork that Martinez shared, it does at least reveal that Garfield’s Peter would have embarked outside of New York City to combat his adversaries. Sinister Six was originally set to come out on November 11, 2016, and a Venom spinoff also entered development. However, following The Amazing Spider-Man 2 critically and commercially underperformed, Sony partnered with Marvel Studios to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting in both spinoffs being shelved. Though the Sinister Six still hasn’t been adapted for the silver screen, the team has appeared in animated TV shows like Spider-Man: The Animated Series (where they were called the Insidious Six) The Spectacular Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. Morbius’ end-credits scene also teased the Sinister Six when Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes approached Jared Leto’s Michael Morbius about forming a team. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse referenced the “Sinister Six cartel” in a news report Miles Morales heard on Earth-42. As the wait continues for the Sinister Six to make their film debut, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters, following several months after the release of the Prime Video series Spider-Noir. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for June 18, 2027.
