Andrew Garfield fans convinced he’s the new American Psycho after suspicious photo

Has Luca Guadagnino found his Patrick Batemam in Andrew Garfield after all? (Picture: Lisa O’Connor/AFP via Getty Images) The American Psycho remake had been a hotly anticipated movie from Challengers filmmaker Luca Guadagnino before it recently appeared to run out of steam. But now a new photo shoot with Guadagnino’s current leading man Andrew Garfield has kickstarted fan speculation once more. The pair are promoting new OpenAI film Artificial, which has been getting strong reviews on the festival circuit, after collaborating last year on the Julia Roberts social thriller After the Hunt. However, Garfield, 43, has now posed for GQ in a series of pictures that seemed… suspiciously relevant to American Psycho – at least, if fans online are to be believed. And this is, of course, how we have arrived at the latest theory – that this is some sort of soft-launch for Garfield to take on the role of Patrick Bateman, previously famously played by Christian Bale. The spread of Garfield’s pictures, taken by Richard Burbridge and in which he is styled by George Cortina, rely heavily on pinstripe suits and sharp shirts with colour-contrasting collars, which give a lot of corporate ‘90s energy. The Artifical’s actor new photoshoot was picked up for having distincly American Psycho vibes (Picture: Richard Burbridge/GQ) The outfits were reminiscent of Christian Bale’s wardrobe as Bateman in the 2000 film adaptation (Picture: Lionsgate/Kobal/Shutterstock) There’s then the Saint Laurent latex-look black trench coat, the high-shine finish of which – complete with black leather gloves – is rather reminiscent of Bateman’s transparent raincoat he dons over his suit to keep it immaculate while jauntily bludgeoning a victim to death with an axe. Going one step further, the cover image is the one which really sells the theory, given that it shows Garfield skipping with a rope, clad only in white boxers, shoes and socks, with an intense expression and his hair slicked back. This is almost identical to a famous sequence, once again in the 2000 adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis’s novel, directed by Mary Harron. Fans were quick to pick up on the ‘patrick batemanifying’ of the Uprising actor, as the photos began circulating on social media. ‘Is that…….. PATRICK BATEMAN??????’ tweeted Sarah, who seemed heavily invested in the link. In particular, this cover image looked identical to a shot in the film (Picture: Richard Burbridge/GQ) Surely it’s not a coincidence? (Picture: Lionsgate) ‘Basically a test run for American Psycho lmaoooo,’ tweeted Terrence, while Ivy said: ‘Not the Patrick Bateman tease.’ ‘Looks like American Psycho. Maybe Andrew Garfield is Luca Guadagnino’s pick,’ agreed another X user. If so, this would make for a distinctly more positive update on the film, which was publicly announced more than two years ago. Last month, Guadagnino seemed much less committed to definitely taking on a new big screen adaptation of American Psycho, simply telling Vulture: ‘Maybe one day I would do.’ During CinemaCon in May 2025, Guadagnino had said in a video segment: ‘We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much. ‘[Writer Scott Z. Burns] is doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely.’ The director also teased that he was currently ‘in conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads’, although no names were shared. A very similar outfit here as well, and fans were quickly all over the comparison (Picture: Richard Burbridge/GQ) Guadagnino’s adaptation of American Psycho was announced in 2024, but things have seemed less certain recently (Picture: Lionsgate/Kobal/Shutterstock) In December 2024, it was reported Austin Butler would play Bateman after rumours of Jacob Elordi’s involvement, but later author Ellis himself claimed that ‘a couple of high-profile actors’ had already passed on the movie. If it goes ahead, the new film won’t be a direct remake of the 2000 movie, with Guadagnino’s version poised to be a new take on the story that will have a more significant erotic emphasis than the original picture. There might also be room to adjust the age bracket too as Bateman is 27, whereas Garfield – despite his youthful, Spider-Man appropriate looks – is in his 40s Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson previously described the director as the ‘perfect visionary’ to helm the new cinematic iteration of American Psycho. He said in a statement: ‘We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.’ Read the full cover interview in GQ’s Men of the Year issue and on GQ.com.
