The direct movie adaptations buck the trend of those generally being quite poor, while wider releases like the Battle for Middle-earth strategy games and The Third Age did an incredible job of taking a different approach. As you might expect, though, The Lord of the Rings has always felt the most at home in the RPG genre, and while Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were very enjoyable, there hasn't been too much to do recently. That could all be about to change though, as one of the lesser appreciated releases could be about to make a surprising return. As first reported by Player One, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North could be making a return, fifteen years after its original release. That revelation comes after a new listing for the game was discovered in the Steam database files, which also included a reference to Epic services, likely meaning this latest effort has been built in Unreal Engine 5. Originally developed by Snowblind Studios, the original story follows a trio as they try to hunt down and defeat a powerful Black Númenórean named Agandaûr. The premise was actually very compelling, and the game was relatively fun to play, but there were undoubtedly some major issues. The combat was repetitive and the characters didn't really feel like they advanced as they should, but the biggest issue of all were the game-breaking bugs that marred so many playthroughs. A return via a remake here does certainly have some potential though, particularly if they are able to add more variety and depth to the overall experience. A fresh approach to the various story elements could also see some fairly major improvements across the board, particularly if they are able to work in the known characters from the franchise in a more believable way. Season 3 of The Rings of Power is launching later this year, having made some pretty major decisions to reset a series that many are yet to be convinced by. At the same time, we also know that Warhorse Studios are heading up an entirely new open-world RPG based on the franchise, though we will have to wait a while longer to see that.
