Amy Madigan Latest To Join Tom Hanks & Callum Turner In Sony’s Baseball Film ‘The Comebacker’

EXCLUSIVE: Weapons Oscar winner Amy Madigan has inked a deal to join The Comebacker, the new Sony film billed as a love letter to baseball, which stars Tom Hanks and Callum Turner. Based on a short story by Dave Eggers, the film revolves around a young pitcher (Turner) for the New York Mets whose life is turned upside down when he gets hit by a batted ball. Madigan plays the owner of the team, whose pitching coach is played by Hanks. Patricia Clarkson plays the coach’s wife. Marielle Heller, the filmmaker behind titles like The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and the Hanks starrer A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, is directing from her own script. Gary Goetzman is set to produce for Playtone alongside Heller and Leah Holzer for Defiant By Nature in cooperation with Major League Baseball and The Mets. Working Barn will exec produce alongside Charles Miller. We were first to report on The Comebacker, a package three studios were competing for, back in March. Production is set to kick off in New York this fall. Watch on Deadline Madigan is coming off an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s horror breakout, Weapons. The award came four decades following her first Oscar nom for the Bud Yorkin film Twice in a Lifetime. In film, Madigan’s other credits include Field of Dreams, Pollock and Gone Baby Gone, to name a few. Other upcoming projects for the actress include James Ponsoldt’s Apple thriller Sponsor, where she stars opposite Jason Segel and John C.
