The projects were inaugurated at a function in Barapullah attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of her cabinet and Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra, among others.Speaking at the event, Gupta said the launch of the projects showed the “power of a double-engine government”. “Only with a double-engine government can Delhi's stalled projects be opened to the public. The Centre and the Delhi government are working together,” she said.Gupta said her government was planning several projects to deal with traffic congestion, which she said had been neglected over the last 50 years. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma, who was also present, said the 11-year wait for the Barapullah flyover had finally ended.“Last year, we committed that the Barapullah flyover would be over in a year and we have done it. For the last 18 months, there has been no politics of allegations or excuses, but only work done by the government for the public,” Verma said. The Barapullah Phase 3 corridor, the largest of the four projects, is meant to improve connectivity between east and south Delhi by linking Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and AIIMS through signal-free roads. The flyover will join the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, completing a stretch of about 10 kilometres. The project was approved in 2014 and work began in 2015. It was initially due to be completed in 2017, but saw multiple delays and major cost overruns. Its revised cost rose to about Rs 1,635 crore. The other projects launched on Tuesday include two new flyovers aimed at reducing congestion in south Delhi and an underpass on Outer Ring Road in north Delhi. With the launch of the four projects, the Centre and the Delhi government highlighted their focus on easing traffic and improving road connectivity in the capital, led by the long-pending Barapullah Phase 3 corridor.- Ends
