American Airlines Unveils Its Biggest-Ever Cabin Overhaul: 4K Screens For Every 737 And A321

Additional entertainment will come from high-speed Wi-Fi provided by Starlink. This offering is part of a "sweeping transformation across its narrowbody fleet." The new screens will be on delivered aircraft starting in 2028, plus all of its retrofitted aircraft. Once completed, the screens will be present on every Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 in the fleet. 140 American Airlines long-haul aircraft already have such screens. From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey.” American Airlines Had Previously Moved Away From Seatback Screens Credit: Shutterstock This time last year, Simple Flying was reporting that American Airlines was slowly removing seatback screens on its domestic flights. It cited cost reductions, passenger preference, and aircraft performance issues. "More than 90 percent of our passengers already bring a device or screen with them when they fly," wrote American Airlines, as reported by Time Magazine. Removing the seatback screen also avoids the need to carry out costly maintenance. Now American Airlines is going the other way, saying that younger passengers prefer to use their personal device alongside rather than instead of a seatback screen. The airline first started removing seatback screens in 2017, coinciding with the arrival of the Boeing 737 MAX. American Airlines received this aircraft without any seatback screens and started to indicate a shift towards a bring-your-own-device entertainment model. The carrier started to upgrade other entertainment aspects of its aircraft, such as improving in-flight Wi-Fi, offering streaming services and providing charging points. The policy then transitioned to pre-existing 737s and A321s via Project Oasis, an initiative to standardize American Airlines' narrowbody interiors. The final American Airlines narrowbody planes to have seatback screens were legacy A319s. At the time, the carrier had 32 of these aircraft. The screens were slowly replaced through retrofits, beginning in spring 2025, coinciding with heavy maintenance checks. The Carrier Is Also Introducing More Premium Seats American Airlines has matched the introduction of enhanced seatback screens with another development to improve the passenger experience: an increase in the number of premium seats. Premium seating on the airline's narrowbody jets will rise from 25% to 40%. American Airlines' A319 and A320 aircraft are currently being retrofitted with an additional row of first class. The Airbus A319neo is also set to be reconfigured with more first class seats, although the airline does not specify exactly how many will be available. Incoming aircraft will arrive with a high first class capacity. The airline's Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets will have 24 first class seats. Passengers on a lower budget who still want a premium flying experience will have the option of increased access to Main Cabin Extra (MCE). American Airlines is retrofitting the "majority of the narrowbody fleet" with more MCE seating. These passengers have access to extra legroom, dedicated storage space, earlier boarding and a complimentary beverage.
