American Airlines Launches 2 New International Routes From This Major Hub Next Week

He is based near London, UK. As the peak summer is already here, US carriers will barely launch any routes in August. American Airlines will introduce two links from its John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) hub, both of which are international. OAG data shows that JFK is American's tenth-busiest hub based on August departures. The oneworld member plans an average of 91 daily outbound flights. The airline's JFK offering has increased by 2% year-over-year to the highest level for four years. It will be the first time that American (and any US carrier) has operated between JFK and YYC. It'll run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays using the 172-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8, with the final departure of 2026 taking place on October 4. Unusually, flights will only exist for two months. It'll join WestJet, becoming the first time that two airlines have operated simultaneously. It is bound to make the weekly new routes celebratory article (see last week's edition). OAG shows that the market was originally served by Air Canada in 2006, with that carrier pulling out in 2009. WestJet debuted in 2014 and has, until now, always operated on its own. Perhaps surprisingly, American will now have two routes from the Big Apple to YYC. It'll also run from LaGuardia Airport (LGA), with a Saturday-only service on the MAX 8. This link launched last June. Until that happened, the airport pair had not been served. As the following schedule shows, the timings from both airports are nearly identical. American will now be the only carrier with two routes from Greater New York to YYC. It'll compete indirectly with United from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), with the Airbus A320 and 737 MAX 8 deployed in the peak summer. Until now, the airline has not operated from JFK (or LGA). That will change on August 5, when the carrier's daily operation on Republic's 76-seat Embraer E175s will launch from JFK. It will be served through October 12. JFK-YQB last had nonstop flights between 2013 and 2017. While the frequency varied, Delta Connection operated up to three times daily. Depending on the year, the 50-seat ERJ145, 65-seat Bombardier CRJ700, and the 76-seat CRJ900 were deployed. Credit: Shutterstock In the full year of 2026, American and American Eagle plan a total of 2,445 departures from JFK/LGA to Canada on a record seven routes: JFK to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), YQB, and YYC, along with LGA to Halifax / Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL), YYC, and YYZ. There's an average of seven daily departures, although that rises to a high of nine daily outbound services during the peak summer. Despite the two additional links, the number of flights will be the lowest level for four years, when the world temporarily changed due to the pandemic. In 2010, OAG shows that a considerable 8,319 departures were available (23 daily). That was when the carrier flew from JFK to YHZ, YUL, and YYZ, and from LGA to YUL and YYZ. Nowadays, American has more seasonal offerings with sub-daily frequencies, while the core routes have far fewer services. For example, JFK/LGA had 14 daily services in 2010, against six in 2026. Average seats per flight has jumped from just 43 to 68 in this period, which slightly helped to narrow the gap.
