American Airlines Launches 14 New Routes From World's Busiest Airport: See Full List

While Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is the world's busiest airport by passenger numbers, the winner when it comes to aircraft movements is Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). In recent years, American Airlines has looked to grow there, as shown by recent and upcoming additions to regional, mainline domestic, and international routes. Indeed, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, the Fort Worth-based carrier and oneworld founding member is launching at least 14 routes out of O'Hare in 2026/27. Tokyo-Bound By far the most high-profile addition to American's network growth in Chicago is Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). The carrier announced last month that it would begin serving this transcontinental route on March 27 next year, becoming its 11th long-haul destination from O'Hare. The flights will operate daily using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This aircraft type has strong premium coverage, with American highlighting 30 Flagship business class flatbeds and 21 premium economy recliners. In Tokyo, passengers can use well-timed onward connections with its oneworld partner Japan Airlines (JAL) to various Asian destinations. American's CEO Robert Isom spoke about the new route. "This new service is a testament to our continued commitment to make our hub stronger, broaden choices for customers, and keep Chicago competitive on the world stage." These aircraft operate more frequently to optimize connectivity across several flights, rather than carrying the same number of passengers on one mainline service, but they offer less timing flexibility. 10 of American's 14 new routes are regional. SkyWest's CRJs serve both routes under the American Eagle brand. Tri-Cities came next, with flights starting in May using Envoy Air's Embraer E170s. This airline-and-aircraft combination also launched flights to Allentown in June 2026. That month also saw the launch of American Eagle flights to Erie and Lincoln using SkyWest's CRJs, while September brought flights to Marion with this airline-and-aircraft combination. Looking ahead, American Eagle flights to South Bend will start in October, followed by Charlottesville in November and Harlingen in December. The first was San Jose, California, which it served on a short-term basis in February using the 737-800. Just eight flights operated in each direction, added specifically for the Super Bowl at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
