American Airlines Launches 12 New Nonstop Routes From The World’s Busiest Airport [Full List]

He is based near London, UK. American Airlines is the world's largest operator in multiple respects, including for the number of daily flights. However, with 'only' 371 destinations, the oneworld member ranks second, behind United Airlines (389 destinations). Everyone knows that American's network includes Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). Due to a huge number of regional jets, this is the world's busiest airport for flights. Of course, it does not rank number one for most other metrics, including passengers (Atlanta), seats for sale (Atlanta), and available seat miles (London Heathrow). American Launches These 12 Routes From ORD Credit: Flickr In 2026, OAG data shows that American has scheduled an average of 971 daily movements at ORD (takeoffs and landings combined). That's the airline's most activity since 2007. The growth in flights, along with a greater use of higher-capacity equipment (with more seats per movement), means that American has a record number of seats for sale this year. Part of the expansion is because of 12 new and returning routes from ORD, which are summarized in the following table. They were identified by comparing American's ORD network in 2025 with what is scheduled for 2026 and, for now at least, until July 2027. Some were last served years ago. Some are launching in retaliation to United's return or adding higher frequencies. This week, American announced six new European routes, but none will be served from ORD. However, the carrier will return to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT), although many were expecting flights to Osaka Kansai. That might have been too entrepreneurial for American, although United subsequently unveiled flights from San Francisco to Osaka. Start Date American From ORD To... Perhaps the return was inevitable, as United will reintroduce flights between ORD and NRT in October 2026. American will replace joint venture partner Japan Airlines on the airport pair, with both carriers operating on a metal-neutral basis. They pool and share revenue on that route (and others). JAL's final departure will be on March 27, 2027. However, Japan's largest carrier will continue to operate daily between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), which is much closer to downtown Tokyo than NRT, and ORD. Next summer, four airlines will operate between ORD and the Japanese capital: All Nippon (HND, NRT), American (NRT), JAL (HND), and United (HND and NRT). Flights will be up by 20% year-over-year. With six daily services, ORD will now have as many flights to Tokyo as San Francisco. American Eagle From Chicago To South Bend Credit: Shutterstock At just 73 nautical miles (135 km) on a great circle basis, this route to SBN is, of course, extraordinarily short. American Eagle's flights will return after 27 years. It'll join United Express, which the US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows introduced this link in 2003. When combined, the pair will collectively have up to 11 daily departures, which is a phenomenal amount. United will mainly have eight daily flights. They'll be on SkyWest's CRJ200s (all-economy) and CRJ550s (domestic first, economy plus, main cabin), both of which have 50 seats. In comparison, American will deploy the 65-seat CRJ700s (including first, main cabin extra, main cabin). Given the very short nature of the market, virtually everyone connects to another flight in ORD. In the first quarter of 2026 (January-March), DOT data shows that 98% of United Express's SBN-ORD passengers transited at the world's busiest airport for flights. Yet, only 69% of seats were filled during that cold period. It'll be good to see how things change following the return of American Eagle's flights.
