American Airlines is the largest airline in the US by passengers carried and scheduled seat capacity. Last year, it carried around 224 million passengers, and for this year, it has scheduled around 290 million seats across its network. The airline serves nearly 350 destinations around the world, but like its competitors, it has been making changes to its network. Among the latest changes, the oneworld alliance member is bringing back its New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)-Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) route in April 2027, nearly eight years after it last operated in 2019. It will also launch a new service between JFK and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in June, moving its existing Bozeman service from LaGuardia Airport (LGA). At the same time, American's current schedule shows that it has made changes to its nine existing routes. According to scheduled data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, the airline is removing its Miami International Airport (MIA)- Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) route completely. The Dallas/Fort Worth-based carrier launched the nonstop MIA-YUL service in 1992. Since then, the service has changed considerably, switching between year-round and seasonal operations and being suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, it operated seasonally from January through September. American is scheduled to bring the route back on December 17 and operate it through January 5, 2027, but all flights after that date have now been removed. In addition, its JFK- Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) service will no longer return as previously planned. American launched the service in 2023 and operated it up to twice daily before suspending it in May 2026. It had been scheduled to return in April 2027 and operate through May 26, but those flights have now been removed from the schedule. In addition, the airline is changing its Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)-YUL service, although the route is not being removed completely. Cirium's schedule data shows that American will suspend the service from April through most of May. The airline previously ended its Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)-Tulum International Airport (TQO) service in February 2025, less than a year after launching the route in March 2024. It cited excess industry capacity and the continued evaluation of its network at the time. Now, American is dropping its MIA-Tulum service. The route is currently on a seasonal pause and is scheduled to return on November 19, operating through December 1 before pausing again. It is then due to resume on December 17 and operate through January 5, 2027, after which it will no longer operate. American will continue serving Tulum from its Dallas/Fort Worth hub, with up to five weekly flights scheduled on the route. Route Notes Miami–Montreal Canceled; last scheduled flight on Jan 5, 2027 Seasonal route; Returning on Dec 17–Jan 5 using an Airbus A319; no flights after that (Until last week, the airline had 5x weekly flights scheduled for Feb and Mar, followed by daily service from Apr through Aug) New York JFK–Toronto Canceled 2x daily service suspended in May; not returning Strong competition from Delta Air Lines, which offers 3x daily flights Dallas/Fort Worth–Montreal Suspended for a brief period 5x weekly to daily service; no scheduled flights in Nov 2026, returning on Dec 17–Jan 5; Then again, returning on May 27, daily with Airbus A320 Miami–Tulum Canceled; last scheduled flight on Jan 5, 2027 Returning in Nov with reduced frequency Relatively poor load factor (especially on mainline flights) — 77.94% for the year ending in Jun 2026 Charlotte–San Jose del Cabo Canceled after August; last scheduled flight Aug 7, 2027 Currently on seasonal pause; returning in Nov with reduced frequency Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany Canceled; last operated Sep 7 Summer seasonal service (up to 7x weekly) Chicago O'Hare–Lincoln Canceled; last scheduled flight Apr 5, 2027 Only launched in June (1x daily); strong competition from United Airlines Phoenix–Provo Canceled; last scheduled flight Jan 5, 2027 Currently 1x daily Poor load factor; only 67.99% for the year ending June 2026 Washington National–Hilton Head Island Temporary suspension; Nov through Apr 5, 2027 1x daily Poor load factor: 52.16% for flights operated by Republic Airline; 63.36% for flights operated by Envoy Air (for the year ending June 2026) Furthermore, the airline is also removing its CLT-San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD) service from its future schedule. The route is currently on a seasonal pause and is due to return in November, although the schedule shows only scattered operations. From August 2027, the service is no longer available for sale. American recorded an average load factor of 73.69% on the route for the twelve months ending June 2026. Chicago-Lincoln Service Is Ending Too Soon Amid Strong United Competition Credit: Angel DiBilio | Shutterstock As noted in the table above, the remaining route changes are domestic, and several of the affected services have recorded relatively low load factors. One of the notable cuts is the Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)-Lincoln Airport (LNK) route, which American launched in June 2026. The service marked the airline's return to Lincoln after a 20-year absence and formed part of its broader strategy to serve underserved mid-sized cities. Notably, the oneworld alliance member launched services to Lincoln from three of its hubs. DFW has twice-daily service, ORD has one daily flight, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is scheduled to launch one daily seasonal service from December 17. However, the ORD-LNK route has faced strong competition from United Airlines, which operates up to five daily flights. Traffic data for the 12 months ending June 2026 shows that around 65 passengers traveled each way per day on the route, as noted by Patreon. The Dallas/Fort Worth-based carrier held only around 2% of the market, compared with roughly 98% for United. American's single daily flight therefore had a very small share of the traffic on the route, which is around 465 miles (748 km) long.
