Amelia Dimoldenberg slams ‘puppet’ Ed Sheeran in brutal SNL UK monologue

The Chicken Shop Dates star, 32, joined the cast of SNL to host this weekend’s edition of the show – the third episode of series two. As she took to the stage to deliver her opening monologue, Dimoldenberg enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on her rise to fame. ‘I’ve been incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher, and even a world-famous redheaded puppet with a hand up his a**e telling him what to say,’ she began. A photo of her with Elmo the Muppet then popped up on the screen, prompting Dimoldenberg to clarify: ‘No, the other one.’ The image then changed to one of her and Sheeran, 35, who continues to face backlash for his tepid response to rapper Macklemore being axed from his USA tour. While oguemma77 described the moment as ‘brutal.’ This comes a week after SNL targeted Sheeran during its cold open and Weekend Update sections. The show also took aim at Sheeran last week (Picture: Sky One) In last week’s show, a version of Sheeran played by Annabel Marlow popped up to weigh in on the dangers of AI. ‘I was just outside sitting on the fence,’ Marlow began, before adding: ‘When it comes to conflicts, the bravest thing you can do is to say nothing at all.’ But worse was to come for Sheeran, who came in for a real kicking during Ania Magliano and Paddy Young’s Weekend Update. Magliano started with a joke about the Macklemore controversy being ‘the worst thing that has happened to Ed Sheeran fans since their head injury.’ Young then got really personal by taking a jab at Sheeran’s lazy eye, and describing the singer as ‘a passionate advocate of causes that are allowed.’ Sheeran’s tepid response hasn’t gone down well (Picture: Shutterstock) Earlier this week, it was revealed that shows at the Robert Kraft-owned Gillette Stadium won’t be going ahead after all. Sheeran had been set to perform at the Foxborough, Massachusetts, stadium on Friday and Saturday, continuing the tour after Macklemore was removed as an opening act. However, the gigs have now been cancelled due to bad weather. The cancellation comes after a difficult few weeks for Sheeran, who faced backlash from fans and industry peers. As supporting acts and even his own backing band, dropped out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and his ‘free Palestine’ message, Sheeran found himself increasingly alone. Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty, said that his long-time friend had been given an ‘ultimatum’ by billionaire Kraft, who threatened that the tour would not be allowed to continue at Gillette Stadium as long as he remained on the line-up. Sheeran later clarified that the decision had not been his, but rather that of the tour’s promoters. I just feel like it happened very quickly,’ he told the crowd. He also said he was ‘deeply worried’ venues would start to ‘pre-approve’ artists or their content. Macklemore has not publicly commented on Sheeran’s statement, but has announced a Free Palestine tour in Dublin, Paris and London next month – with all proceeds going towards the Palestinian people and movement. ‘It’s 2026. Being apolitical during a genocide doesn’t work anymore,’ the rapper wrote in a full post to Instagram. Metro has contacted Ed Sheeran’s representatives for comment.
