AMD might finally be bringing its most important gaming CPU upgrade to laptops, and it makes me cautiously optimistic

AMD's proprietary 3D V-cache is perhaps one of the most important CPU innovations of recent times, and anyone who has been remotely interested in processors knows that already. It's one of AMD's biggest tangible advantages in gaming over competitors right now, and it has been for a while, especially with Team Red steadily refining the formula with every generation. Now, it looks like AMD could be preparing to bring that same advantage to its next generation of mobile processors. If the reports are to be believed, it could have much bigger implications for gaming laptops for many, many years to come by addressing one of the biggest limitations holding back laptop gaming. Here's why I think the new mobile X3D processors could be the upgrade laptop gamers have been waiting for. The Ryzen X3D advantage is undeniable, and has been so for years The 3D V-cache made AMD the default choice for gaming systems Before I delve into what AMD could be planning for the next generation of mobile chips, it's worth understanding the advantage the 3D V-Cache offers. The most straightforward way to do so is to just compare each X3D chip with its non-X3D counterpart. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D was the first commercial processor to debut AMD's 3D V-Cache technology in 2022, and counter-intuitively, was about 7% slower than the 5800X in single-threaded workloads and tied with it in multithreaded performance. The real advantage of the first-gen 3D V-Cache, however, was in gaming workloads. Featuring a total L3 cache size of 96MB, the chip delivered a 15% uplift over the 5800X in TechSpot's 2022 benchmark across 41 titles, while 1% lows improved by an even more impressive 22%. In 1440p performance, where performance is more GPU-limited, the advantage went down to 9% versus the 5800X. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D continued that trend as expected, averaging 11% more performance than the 7700X in their 2023 benchmark of 12 titles. The third generation, however, was the one to knock it out of the park, with the 9800X3D averaging a staggering 30% faster performance than the 9700X in TechSpot's testing, with some games even showing gains up to 45%. What should be of great interest to OEMs is that the X3D chips can deliver substantially more gaming performance per watt, and some of the generations achieve that while drawing less power than their non-X3D counterparts. Look no further than the 5800X3D, which, despite having the same 105W TDP as the 5800X, consumes 15% less total system power in comparable workloads. The go-to chips for desktop gaming might be coming to laptops Team Red might just make AMD CPUs the default choice for gaming laptops AMD has already, in the past, experimented with bringing the 3D V-Cache to gaming laptops, first with the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D and more recently with the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. The latter uses AMD's second-generation 3D V-Cache tech and is the company's incumbent flagship gaming processor. The rumors suggest that AMD might've just been getting started all this time. A recent report citing a prominent Chinese tipster, named "Golden Pig Upgrade Pack" claimed on Weibo (a popular social media channel in China) that AMD is preparing another X3D-equipped mobile processor, potentially a Ryzen 7 9800HX3D. The rumored chip would reportedly feature eight Zen 5 cores, 16 threads, and 96MB of L3 cache, with mass production allegedly planned for the Q4 2026 and a possible CES 2027 launch. But there's a catch, as there has always been The market has not been kind to consumers when it comes to computing Putting aside the excitement of another flagship mobile chip release for a moment, the last fourteen months in the consumer technology space has shown just how unkind the economy can be to consumers, mostly owing to the DRAM crisis, which has driven up the total bill of materials up by a considerable margin when it comes to any device that relies on DDR5 memory. Every mobile X3D chip thus far has been a 16-core flagship locked to a handful of laptops in the range of $2,500 to $5,000, and on Prime Day last year, TechRadar found only five laptops equipped with the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, with every single one retailing above the $2,300 mark. Right now, the most affordable laptop that comes with a Ryzen 9 9955HX3D can be priced as high as $2,799. Fortunately enough, there's space for some measured optimism here. Golden Pig Upgrade Pack also claimed that AMD may not lock the new chip to a specific GPU tier as it has done so in the past, which means that OEMs may be able to exercise greater flexibility when coupling the new rumored flagship chip. This essentially means that a broader category of laptops, across mid-range and upper mid-range, might also see the chip alongside budget GPUs. Given the state of the PC hardware economy, it seems like the prudent thing to do if AMD wants to see any serious market penetration when it comes to the new generation of X3D mobile chips. It most certainly is a better strategy than confining the chip to flagship hardware configurations. However, the ultimate decision of how and where it's implemented will come down heavily to OEMs. Great hardware, possibly unfortunate timing? Every great innovation in the PC hardware landscape seems to be arriving at the worst possible time. AMD's mobile X3D chips and their (possible) decision to not lock them to flagship laptops could genuinely change laptop gaming, but whether consumers actually benefit may eventually come down to how much OEMs are willing to compromise on margins. The economic landscape may change, though, and as of now, though, it's reasonable to be cautiously optimistic.
