With the Linux 7.4 kernel and also marked for back-porting to the v7.2 and v7.3 series is finally the ability to monitor temperature sensors on AMD 600 Series chipsets that launched alongside the Ryzen 7000 series processors. Earlier this year I wrote about a new AMD temperature driver for Linux developed by OpenAI Codex GPT-5.5 for targeting the Promontory 21 chipsets' xHCI controllers. Promontory 21 covers both the AMD 600 series and 800 series chipsets for AM5 processors. But in that driver, which was upstreamed in Linux 7.2, only the AMD 800 series chipset device IDs ended up being added... So no 600 series support. But now upstreamed in Linux 7.4 and marked for 7.2/7.3 back-porting is a patch adding in those AMD 600 series chipsets. No other changes to that "xhci-pci-prom21" driver are needed besides the different PCI IDs to get the chipset temperature monitoring driver working. That patch was merged overnight as part of the USB pull request updates for the Linux 7.4 merge window. Those unfamiliar with this driver that came about earlier in the year can see the prom21-xhci kernel.org documentation if curious about this additional AMD Linux temperature sensor.
