The iconic sci-fi franchise started with a movie, 1994's Stargate, which was directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich. After Stargate grossed $196.6 million in theaters worldwide, the sci-fi franchise was brought back on the small screen. There have been many Stargate TV shows through the years, starting with 1997's Stargate SG-1, which ran for a whopping 10 seasons, concluding in 2007, and featured actors like Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Michael Shanks, and many more. In November 2025, Amazon MGM Studios announced that a new Stargate series was in development. However, this June, the project was scrapped, but it has been revived. According to Variety, a new Stargate series is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios with WandaVision's Jac Schaeffer leading the project. Schaeffer has an overall deal with the studio and will executive produce the show alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures. This is Amazon's second attempt at resurrecting the Stargate franchise, as an earlier attempt with Martin Gero as showrunner, who was involved with Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, failed to grain traction.
